Here, have a look at this to see if you're changing the settings in the right place. You can input two sets of numbers for two different networks. Note "General" and "Alternate Configuration."

Yep... right place... but my problem is that I have no network numbers for my internet connection at home. Know any way I can find that out, short of spending an hour with a few Koreans on the phone trying to explain what I'm looking for?

Thanks

You usually don't need to input them. Just leave the General one blank, and then input the numbers in the Alternate connection tab.

Did you install XP service pak 2? If so, that may be your problem. My internet stopped working (KT VDSL) after I installed SP2 and I was told that there are some compatibility problems or some such nonsense. I didn't buy that, so I simply deleted SP2 and, voila! My connection was up and running again! Then, I reinstalled SP2 and guess what. Internet stopped working again. So there is indeed a problem with SP2 and some internet providers. But the local KT blokes don't seem to know how to deal with it. It's probably something ubersimplistic, but I can't be bothered.

Well, so far I'm just typing in IP address numbers every time, and praying for Google OS. Laughing

From the original post this sounds like a MAC ID problem. I had the same thing happen with my connection which is on a company LAN. You mentioned having a screen pop up that wants your registration card number. I think what is happening is that your home connection is limited to use by one computer. The network takes the MAC ID of your computer and then will only allow that computer to connect to the Internet. This effectively disables multiple IP's being used by one household. If you buy a router and then replicate the MAC ID from the currently working computer (the desktop) with the router you should be able to connect with any number of computers using private DHCP. My router allows me to select the range of IP's available on the LAN side while the WAN side sees only the one MAC ID and assigns a Public IP to that device. If you have a static IP you can also assign that to the Router (but by the sounds of your post it's all automatic).

To find you MAC ID enter console and type:

ipconfig /all

Look for the "physical address"-- this is your MAC address. Take that number and enter it into the MAC address of your router. Now all computers behind that router will connect via DHCP.

Anyways, I hope this helps.

Cheers

Well, somebody must like me, because it all started to work as it should for some odd reason. I had just left the settings the same, and it now seems to work as Pangit or someone said it should. This, after several days of not working. Weird. Either someone at my home building networked flipped some switch, or someone at school did something to allow my computer to work when it didn't before. I don't know. It works now!
