She'll probably be surprised by the amount of student participation there is in class. I've been told that in Korean schools, students are just expected to absorb information, not ask questions and such.

This is really true. I teach at a foreign school and the biggest problem we have with students transferring from Korean school is teaching them how to participate in class.
Prepare her, if you can, to volunteer to answer questions, to work in groups and to answer critical thinking-type questions (rather than just regurgitating sentences she read from the book). |

I know this isn't the advice you're looking for, and there is nothing that can be done about it, but doesn't anyone else find it ...weird? unsettling? abnormal?...that a family has decided to send their daughter, aged 14 (which could really only be 12 as far as we count it) over an ocean, alone, to LIVE WITH A FAMILY THAT THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, in a city that they don't EVEN KNOW THE NAME OF, to go to a school that is a different religion although is yet to be decided exactly which school it is - and that's supposed to be okay?
Does no one else find this a little ...I don't know what word I'm looking for...... |

yes, it's weird. but it's the same weirdness that makes korean parents blindly believe that a blond canadian female teacher is the best EFL teacher to be found. i have been told that there will be no conflict of interest regarding the religious differences. i'm not sure what catholic school would allow any student the privelege of NOT praying in school. why not send her to a public school with an excellent rating?
anyway, the book i've been asked to teach her is called "weaving it together." it's put out by CNN and has a ton of material to teach. additionally, i've been handed a copy of "chicken soup for the teenage soul" which, to my understanding, was a fairly christian-oriented text.
we'll see.

We're talking about a girl here, right? So
5) If you wear Hello Kitty products expect every boy in the vicinity to suddenly need to change underpants. |
