I'd like to see South Korea pressing for the return of the almost 3,000 of its citizens kidnapped and never returned. Perhaps I'm just being insensitive to Korea's special situation.

EDIT: Wow, I'm such an asshole. I posted the wrong link... Embarassed

I'm pretty sure that using the words 'North Korea', 'honest', and 'talks' in the same sentence creates a rip in the space-time continuum...

3000 South koreans kidnapped???

how did they manage that, and when? does it date from the closing days of the war 50 years ago...or is a more recent event?

what did they do, drag them through the tunnels in the DMZ?

Ok..got it..

The North Korean government has frequently kidnapped a high numbers of North Korean refugees at its border with China, along with South Korean citizens caught helping them
http://www.asianresearch.org/articles/2715.html

Since the cease-fire of the Korean War in 1953, North Korea has kidnapped about 3,750 Korean citizens in more than 470 cases. Most of them were crew members of fishing boats. Most fishermen returned home after undergoing intensive brain-washing in North Korea, but 442 of them are still held in North Korea.
North Korea kidnapped a total of 3,662 fishermen along with their fishing boats. The last victim was Dongjin-ho (skipper: Kim Soon-kun) and its 20 crew members. The boat was abducted near Paeknyon Island in January 1987, and all the crew members are still detained in North Korea.

Over the years, the North has kidnapped fishermen, teenagers on beaches, activists, a pastor in China, a schoolteacher, at least one diplomat and assorted other South Koreans.

The issue on South Koreans kidnapped by North Korea has been a social taboo for a long time...nor has the South Korean government shown any willingness in solving the problem.

Looks like I'll have to be more careful in my travels- I was about 20km further north of the site of the last kidnapping at paeknyong a couple weeks back. had a nice view of the N.K. coast too.

Kidnapping issue proves a hurdle as Japan, N.Korea conclude talks

Imagine that. A sovereign nation sticking up for its own citizens.
