It won't happen.
The goal of the North here is to make it look like it's definately going to happen, get SK people all worked up and excited about it, then, at the last minute, pull out blaming the USA for some obscure thing. The idea is to make the USA look like an obstacle.
It's all a ruse. |

North Korea didn't win anything at the last Olympics, just a silver and a couple of bronze.
A united Korean team would allow the North to misconstrue it's participation as essential and claim south korean successes as its own.
It'll happen. |

I tend to agree. The benefits for North Korea of keeping the feel-good pro-unification momentum going outweigh whatever benefits would result from provoking a minor spat with the US over a sporting event. Not that NK won't provoke any more spats with the US, but they'll probably do it over an issue where the US, not South Korea, would be seen as the main loser of the squabble. Pulling out of the pan-Korean team doesn't hurt the US one bit. |

Of course it will work ( i think ) 
If it means more medals & a higher degree of competiveness why not? Pure self-interest.
One lingering question however is whether such an amalgamating effort on the part of two presently separate nation-states will be acceptable under the Olympic charter?
What will the IOC have to say on this? Nothing? Maybe France & Britain can combine forces? How about Australia & NZ? The US & Mexico? China & Russia.
Clearly this may present a policy hurdle neither "sovereign" entity has yet stopped to consider. |

I understand that TECHNICALLY North Korea and South Korea are still at WAR. There is no internationally-ratified treaty indicating borders, so either side could have won or lost, so who can say whether the country is divided into two distinct nations or unified, it's simply separated, a divided single nation, a position both the North and South have been asserting for over half a century, though each on their own terms.
Shouldn't be too much of a problem legally, as a result. There's a case to be made. |

They've marched together in the opening ceremonies twice, under the officially unofficial 'unification' flag. As well I believe they also competed together in a ping-pong championship or something.

Great, they're going to march together...again.
They're going to compete as Korea (oh, wait, sorry...I mean "Corea"), great.
All sarcasm aside, I actually do think it's great. I felt all happy and hopeful when the two Koreas marched together before, but I don't have any hope that anything more than photo ops will come of this in relation to reunification. The North is the biggest obstacle to reunification than any other player in this game. Not for one minute does Kim Jong-il or any of the elite in Pyongyang want to give up their power.
They're just trying to get the pro-Corea nationalism going and they're hoping for negative fall-out for the US. It will probably work, as South Koreans are quick to bring up the tragic accident involving the two middle school girls, but always seem to forget that during that same period the North intentionally attacked a South Korean ship and killed four South Koreans: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/2073694.stm.
At this point, I just don't care that they'll march together. |
