I was planning on taking a trip over nine days from Christmas Eve until New Year's Day and the Philippines was on my shortlist.
You are going for over two months?
Enjoy!

What's up, Chiaa? You dumping the bookstore and the wife, and shackin' up with some golden-skin honey down South in the Phils?
I've heard that philipino ladies are extremely kind until problems arise, great in the sack, but lie lie lie about everything little thing. Make sure you find one that brushes her teeth. |

Nah, not leaving the wife or the bookstore. I will actually be there for business, but not there all the time. Looking like a 50/50 split. I cannot tell you what I will be doing there as its top secret for the time being, but does affect the store here a lot.
Renting an apartment is the same as getting a half way decent hotel room for four nights. A one bedroom in one of the new executive towers will cost you 9.000 Pesos a month. |

Yes, it is in Makati.
For a furnished place you are looking at between 2.000-4.000 more per month. I have no idea if this is worth it yet as I have not seen the furnishings. I have been told that second hand furniture can be picked up on the cheap so that might be a better way to go.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm kinda doubt P 9,000 - maybe a SMALL bachelor pad. I was paying P 7,000 for a large one-bedroom in Mand. (15 minutes from Makati) and that was 5 years ago.
Another option is just get a room - check the BuynSell.
Kabayan is a small hotel chain with good prices, but none in Makati - Cubao and Pasay (a hop/skip/jump using the MRT) from Makati.
Chasing down second-hand furniture would take tooooo much time, but you might get lucky. BuynSell is a good place to start the hunt.
I used to live in RP, been back many times. PM if you want.
Have contacts that could be helpful.
You will need a cell-phone - 2nd ones available in Virra Mall (Greenhills).
Change money at Robinsons Galleria - Ortigas/EDSA (cash only). TC at SM. You likely need to bring the receipt.
Do NOT take a taxi from the airport - huge rip-off - walk to the street (tell me which airline for specifics - there are 2 different airports), and take a bus/jeepney/regular taxi.
December is the peak time for travel/traffic, so plan on things taking much longer. Most executives will be away/busy/pre-occupied.
GMA/NCR/MM (all abbreviations for 'Manila') will get tooooo much - so plan on getting away for a few days at least - Los Banos, Batangas, Baguio........
Do get a city map (National BookStore) and map out your destinations; group by location to save time. Schedule appointments in early morning or late afternoon, else the heat will knock you off your butt.
If you schedule business appointments, expect people to be late; bring a book. Do confirm a few hours before. Be extremely careful before making any payments, despite having a contract. Do not expect people to do anything by phone; business is done face-to-face. If it's your first contact, expect to be 'handled' by a minion (who can do nothing, except bounce you up).
What else? Enjoy real Chinese food Burgos Street in Makati can be fun - nightclub wise, else Pasay Entertainment Complex. |

Also - I will get the 59-day visa before I leave (going to immi while there sounds like a pain). What will I need to do this? |

yep, done that one enough. you will be arriving thru the "new" airport - exit to your LEFT - head ALL the way down to the street, down to the road - about 200 to 300m. You can snag a taxi or jeepney. You will see Filipinos standing there - waiting for transport. No buses past 11:30pm but there are taxis and jeepneys. INSIST the taxi uses the meter. A jeepney will take you near Airport Road - take a taxi from there, or walk straight 3 or 4 blocks, past the beer parlors - there is a somewhat cheap hotel, Cardinal i think, you can crash at.
DO NOT take the FX (SUV type taxi) at the airport terminal - they will scam you!
Getting thru immigraton and collecting ur luggage takes F****KIng forever - be sure to change into appropriate clothing before you land.
The washrooms in the airport are pretty bad.
An option for over-nights are [love] motels, also called short-time motels - for 12 hours, its just P 500. But check first. Lots of ST motels in Baclaran Pasay not far from EDSA/TAFT area. In the morning, it's an ok walk to EDSA (bus) or to the MRT or LRT or simply grab a taxi. Note that 'hotel' taxis charge a higher rate.
You can charge money at the airport (to the far right, as you leave immigration), but the rate is not so great - suggest changing USD 50 or 100 there, until you find a good rate in the gray-market. |

Visa Application Fee
NOTE: If you intend to stay in the Philippines longer than twenty-one (21) days, a visa must be secured. A fifty-nine(59) day visa can be obtained at the Philippine Consular Office which has jurisdiction over your area before traveling to the Philippines. If you are already in the Philippines, you may file for a 38-day visa waiver (entry 21 days + 38 day waiver = 59 days). Visa waivers are issued at the Bureau of Immigration, in Intramuros, Manila before the expiration date of your authorized stay or with one of their sub-ports in these cities throughout the Philippines. Tourist visas are issued under three main classifications:
Pleasure. For tourists and other visitors to the Philippines. It cannot be used to engage in gainful employment or for business, or to take up educational courses in any learning institution in the Philippines.
Business. The purpose of the temporary stay is to search for areas of investment. It does not allow you to engage in any activity which may be considered a form of gainful employment.
Health. This is granted to those whose intention is to convalesce from a serious injury or illness. The illness, however, should not be contagious or dangerous. |

There are immigration offices around RP you can extend ur visa. If you are in Manila you are stuck with the main office near Intramuros, which is something of a hell-hole. The offices there are in 4 locations, with nary a sign in sight. Facing the office (with Intramuros [the stone walls] to your back), the main office is to the left, the annex to the right. To the farther right, is a small bank building. Go to the office on the grd flr, on the right side to get started, then out, to the other side, up the stairs, to continue. It is bloody confusing - be patient and polite, smile, and ask and ask and ask. Takes an hour or two. Go EARLY in the morning. Believe they open at 8am. Watch out for the extended lunch hour!!
Those directions, BTW, where valid as of March of 2005 - god knows what they have done since!
You can take a bus to the main Post Office (then it is a 5 minute walk going West), or take the LRT (get off at CENTRAL) and walk 10/15 minutes, going West (past the main PO). |
