Great post. But the above leaves me a bit confused. The overall tone and the statements within his/her post seemed pretty clear to me that Grotto expects/desires that hagwon owners run the businesses as Grotto would. (Maybe I just missed something having only the printed word...) It was, IMHO, insulting in general, which is not really my concern. And I did not mean my comments as a criticism, only an observation. We all walk our own road, eh?
I was simply saying that anyone using strong confrontation with a Korean and/or expecting a Western style of doing business, and actually trying to change it, is likely to be sorely disappointed.
In my experience, those Koreans who are inclined to explore and/or already do use non-traditionally Korean ways of thinking and doing business... already are. And they'll seek your input. Otherwise, that brick wall and one's forehead are in for a long battle.

The OP should have replied with a letter like this:
I am doing my best to teach our wonderful students the English language, but throughout my employment I have been distracted with such matters as my taxes not being paid and my and your pension contributions not being made. Perhaps we could do something about this so our beloved students don't feel any negativity in the classroom.
Since you are such a joy to work for and do a great job as boss and owner of this company, I believe that we can continue to work together in an even more professional manner. I believe that it was a very good decision not to provide me with the VCR and microwave that were promised to me in my contract because you are already generous enough to provide me with free accomodations. I appreciate the fact that you negotiated with me to get me a used computer instead of a microwave and VCR even though I had to wait four months after you promised I would get a better one than the other teachers in about four days. I wouldn't want the school to lose money so I accept the fact that I did not get a computer until one of the teachers quit. The teacher who was "Canadian", but I think he might have been born in Iran because his ARC card read "Mohammed" and he would say, "I go to store to buy egg."
The first month where I slept on the Iranian teacher's floor taught me a great lesson. It taught me that nothing in life is free and I respect that you wanted to charge me for utilities while I stayed there and I have since regretted refusing to pay them. I guess that was because my back was sore from sleeping on the floor and you were trying to pay me for only a week but I was there for three weeks before the beginning of my contract.
I am not upset about having to literally run on my visa run or that you have never given me a pay statement. Nor am I upset that you always pay me at the last minute on pay day and make me sit around and wonder all day what's going to happen. Perhaps a pay slip would eliminate this worry. Maybe there are things affecting the environment at school like the pension office being informed that I started in August when I really started in March. This is costing me a fair bit of money and I hope you realise that you cost me much more than would another hagwon. Especially if you factor in the income tax that I will later have to pay out of my own pocket even though you "deducted" it from my salary.
Perhaps we could work on a more professional manner so as to not lose any students. This is costing me much worry and I would like to perform to the best of my abilities. |

Why would your boss e-mail you? That's just fucking stupid.
"Hey, thought I'd send you this e-mail even though I see you every day."
Whatever. |

Amazing!! I am now two weeks into my new job. |

I was beating my head against the wall(figuratively speaking)
Foreign English teachers are (for the most part) more expert in teaching English than a Korean with a Doctorate in English and Education would be.
YET They dont want to listen to us on how English should be taught, ideas that make it more interesting, more student based learning, activities that use and apply the students knowledge.
Things that I have seen used in teaching English in Canada are forbidden here in classrooms. If it hasnt been approved by the Korean ministry of education then it just doesnt exist. This head in the sand mentallity really drives me nuts. |

So, you called the tax office at your new job?
No, I didn't get it straightened out yet. Have signed pay sheets though. 300,960 Won overpaid now. At least I get paid well.
You started your "email from boss" thread early June. How long after that were you fired?
How did he fire you? What was his excuse and did you get one month severence? How can he fire you for not getting into a car with him? |
