Stephen King always used to do it for me, but now I've read just about everything by him that I care to. A very underrated guy, partly because his output is pretty uneven. Big books that can suck you in though; he has an ability to mine an idea like few others. I don't think there's a more natural storyteller being published today.

The His Dark Materials trilogy is the last thing I read that completely sucked me in- lost a whole weekend to those books. It's hard to describe except that Paradise Lost meets Harry Potter with much better results than you'd expect

Maybe you have read it before, but James Clavelle's, "Shogun" did it for me. I thought it was great, and it whisked me off to "la la land." Just like what you want. You can get it at any of the big bookstores. It is all red and about 1100 pages.

Jostein Gaarder - Sophie's World.

Philosophy that's easy and interesting for the layman. Good story as well - excellent mix of fact and fiction.

No doubt about it, The Count of Monte Cristo. Get the unabridged version (1300+ pages), preferably with notes and historical info included.

John Irving novels will do the trick.

My suggestions: World according to Garp, Widow for a year or Cider House rules.

Took the words right outta my mouth.

Start with 'Shogun', then on to 'Tai-pan', 'Gai-jin', and 'Noble House'. These Asian saga novels kinda continue in time following the Noble House from it's beginnings. 'King Rat' is based on Clavell's time spent in a war camp in Singapore - an excellent suck-me-in kind of read. His other novel, 'Whirlwind' is harder to find and I heard it's his most disappointing (haven't read it though).

But Shogun truly rocks - I'd love to see the mini-series from decades ago with Richard Chamberlan as Blackburn...

The Corrections by David Franzen was very engaging, but for sheer thrills and addictiveness, I have to recommend the postmodern horror novel "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. It will suck you right in.
