TV drama, from The West Wing to House of Cards to Yes, Minister seems to have done it so much better.

Can't beleive these 3 movies aren't on the list as they should be required viewing in any US government class:

The Candidate (1970) a young Robert Redford as the idealistic Barry McKay and Peter Boyle as his campaign manager. Simply a great political primer

Bob Roberts (1994), The Candidate gone nuts. Tim Robbins is great and it shows how shallow campaigns have become. Compare the messages in the 2 movies.

The Candidate is how campaigns should be run, Bob Roberts is how they are run.

Then don't forget the documentary The War Room, which was about Clintons 92 campaign .

all 3 should be on a must see list, they never lose anything for me and I've seen each a dozen or so times

Boy, that's a big question. "Political/social" certainly covers a broad field. Some suggestions I would make (some of these are oldies):


Seven Days in May (1964) - one of the most controversial movies of the 60s.
1984 (came out in 1984)
Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) - paranoia about computers and nukes.
M*A*S*H (1970) - a strong anti-war message.
The Killing Fields (1984) - about Cambodia, and western chauvinism.
The Day After (1983) - largely forgotten now but a hit in its time.
On the Beach (1959) - the last days of the world, after a nuclear war.
Raspad (Decay) (1990) - Russian-made movie about the Chernobyl disaster, rarely seen in the west.
The Insider (1999) - journalism and the tobacco industry.

Gawd...there's hundreds I can think of!

Right, it is a broad category. The ".../Social " I guess would include every film satirizing social mores - which is why "American Beauty" is included - as well as films highlighting social problems - like "Traffic."

I think "Forest Gump" should be included for its (mostly Viet Nam era-related) social insights. Also, "Mr. Holland's Opus" for its shedding light on the demise of liberal arts programs (caused by skewed funding priorities) and glorifying the societal role of dedicated teachers (often struggling against the system...). Another Viet Nam film not mentioned yet (I don't think) is "Born on the Fourth of July" ... What about the classics "Blackboard Jungle" and "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" ? (There are many others, but I'll stop for now...)
