I often get asked at work about my love life. I have a boyfriend but shy away from telling them about it because he is a US soldier. I know it would be easy to just say "no" and continue to lie but I am not comfortable with lying to people who have been so kind to me. That and I have become close with some of them and do see them as my friends but am leary about telling them about my GI boyfriend thinking it will change their opinion of me. Does this make sense or am I worrying too much about it and should just let them know?

Tell them you're seeing someone, and he's American. Why do they need to know about his job?

Yes, as PM said - just tell them you have a boyfriend. They will probably ask you what he does, though... and they might say he is a teacher like you - you don't have to give an answer, just smile... and in the end, if and when they find out what he really does, you don't need to deny it and they can't accuse you of lying, because you never really told them what he did to begin with.

I put my foot in my mouth once when I was showing the co-workers some pictures of a function I went to and my date was solider. However the fact that he was in his 40s was the 'scandal.' Basically my advice is to keep details to minimum without lying.

I hate hate hate to tell lies, and since coming to Korea I've been amazed at the willingness of people to tell "little white lies" about their situations. If you truly think lying is evil, then just demure and say "It's private," and smile. If you can get yourself into the mindset surrounding you, you can say "No" with a clear conscience.

Perhaps this is why you have trouble sleeping...
(ref. your trouble sleeping post.)

Come clean.

clean mind = sleepy mind

If you are worried about revealing his true job, you can also reveal his true nature.
After you mention he's a GI, add a little tag line with something special about him.

Good luck out there....
