I must admit that I tolerate soccer these days after living outside of the States for awhile. I really like the international aspect of it -where many countries have good teams and can compete against each other. Like war.

Whats really funny is that th US has a good team now and can conceivably win a world cup in the next 15 years. No one in the States would care though.

Shocked

Yeah, right. (Come on Scotland! I expect us to lose, actually, but in a tight match.)

I don't get why people think that a game finishing 120-110 is more exciting than one finishing 2-1. *shrug*

Granted Im no expert in soccer, but explain to me why a team ranked 9 in the world now couldnt win it all in 15 years? The US made the quarter finals last time around. Despite losing to Germany 1-0, they completely out played the Germans ( by the german teams own admission)

Basketball is a sport solely intended for those who can't be bothered to wait longer than 30 seconds for a change in score. It's a classic symptom of the "Instant-Gratification" disease that is crippling western society.

"Me, me, me! Now, now now!"

Sit through a game on TV? Gawd, I'd rather watch... chess. Or Nascar.

Or Nascar drivers playing chess.

Football (soccer) is by far the most popular team sport in the world and has participation numbers and crowd sizes like no other. There is a reason it's called "The Beautiful Game"!
The worst sport I've ever seen is dwarf-throwing. I don't think the dwarves were all that into it....

Are you talking about Keane, the wang-ker who is being groomed as the next Sir Alex? Yea, he's one bad dude. I must admit I would hate to meet him in a dark alley, especially if he's coming up behind me (his preferred position when tackling). Wonder why he didn't sign up for rugby as a lad?

I think that "stoppage of play" might be the operative words here. What defines a stoppage of play in soccer? Halftime? No, stoppage is the time played after the regular minutes have run out because the blokes were wasting a bit too much time during the game by faking injuries from all the really mean tackling and kicks in the shin (pads).

Or when the ref lingers over someone who's obviously taking a bit of a piss on the pitch, telling him to get over it and play some more...

When the players are trying to throw the ball inbounds but just can't make up their mind which one to throw it to...

Or when the players take a leisurely stroll over to the sideline when their coach trades them out...

Perhaps when they set up one of those very spectacular corner kicks.

Or maybe when they are lining up one of those free kicks and arguing about where the wall should be...

Yea, I agree. Lots of real stoppage in American football. Hard on the attention span. Why not just let the clock run so we can have a bit of a rest during the game as well as after.

Actually, I love American football (and basketball) at any level. I even like to watch soccer but only the highest levels. But none of them can be compared to hockey. Period. The power, speed, finesse, endurance, beauty (or lack thereof), AND the cojones.

Now, just fo' fun...Let's all imagine Keane (either one) on ice with his gloves off. Now, let's put the American footballer on ice with gloves off. Rather amusing, eh?

My aunt used to breed dogs (retrievers) and they have these sort of competitions she'd go to in Canada. They'd fire a dead duck from a cannon on a hilltop. The dog would watch where the duck landed (maybe 100-200 yards away on the other side of an obstacle course) and it would then sprint down the hillside through the obstacles to bring back the dead duck. I guess it was timed.

Interesting...

We had a similar sport when I was growing up:

We used to breed cats (Chesire) and have a competition in Arizona, waaayyyy down south. We'd fire a live baby from a cannon in a valley. The cats would watch where the baby landed, usually splattered against a cliff over the border in Mexico, but sometimes (the best times) hooked on top of a saguaro still wrigglin' n squallin'. We'd have to race the cats through an obstacle course of cactus and barbed wire and bring back the baby before the cats got to it.

I guess I've gone ascrew on this topic as that's gotta be the BEST sport ever!

To descrew:
worst sport..... well, I'm tall so I'm rather fond of dwarf tossing...I love jello wrasslin'(two treats in one!)(especially jello-wrasslin' with naked midgets!)......curlin'??? what the heck is that??? some eskimo sport? whatever.....(although "gettin' a woman on the ice" sounds kinda sporty)

It's gotta be boxing.
Two supposebly grown men beatin' the tarnation outta each other just to get some cash????? How goofy is that?
That's like puttin' a coupla them there ants inna jar and shakin' it.
Did that when I was a kid......
(I guess I've growed up a lil' since then...)

Come on guys,
these games are short and sweet compared to the marathon.
Imagine those poor buggers for what they go through.
They must be bored out of their brains as much as us.

Oh,watching it on TV would be worse than watching paint dry.

I wonder if they think about mundane things such as 'I must remember to take my suit to the drycleaners' or 'I feel like chicken tonight' etc..
