I am teaching in Thailand. I want to come to Korea to teach. I cannot afford to come and look for a job, so i need to secure something from outside Korea. Please please... any ideas how to get a decent Hokwan job WITHOUT going through a recruiter? I have tried posting my CV on this site and stipulating no recruiters... but of course... say no more. Anyway, any sites, threads, advice would be very appreciated.

Cheers
Greg

Well, have you looked at the Korean Jobs Offered Forum on Dave's?As good a place to start as any, but of course, that does not guarantee a DECENT hakwon. That is a very big qualification. Most of them are not....decent. But anyway, check out that forum if you have not already.Of course, they will all tell you they are "decent" or even the "best hakwon" Laughing Laughing They also lie.
Be careful.

The best thing to do would be to EMail institutions direct. Then if that institute is interested in hiring you ask for the EMail addresses of other foreign instructors who are teaching or who have taught at the hagwon and ask them what it is like. Also ask on here as well. Ask as many people as you can but in the end trust your own instincts.

Good luck

Where would I get a list of institutes? I tried the Korean yellow pages and its seems they have a few on there... is this a good starting point?

well greg, if all else fails, here is something you could do:

get a job working for ECC. It sucks, but it'll give you a start here in Korea. Work there while job searching here in Korea. I believe you have to give a month's notice (check the contract) before you leave, but they probably won't give you grief about giving you a letter of release.

I know of a couple teachers at my g/friend's ECC branch who did this. They got burnt out at ECC after a few months, but stayed in Korea and got other jobs with no problem.

You could probably do this with some other big-chain schools but I'm not sure. And this works with ECC brances owned by YBM/ECC, not franchises.
