I'm planning a trip to Thailand this winter and came across a tour package on http://www.timemachine.co.kr/english/ that is 2 days in Bangkok and 3 in Phuket. I was wondering if anyone has done a similar type of tour and have any tips or advice?
Thanks |

My thoughts are that once you get to Bangkok you won't feel like leaving 24 hours later especially on another flight. To avoid another flight go to Pattaya. You will have to take a taxi and should be careful finding one to take you there and back to Bangkok. 5 days aint' much. Try too relax and taking a tour of Bangkok might be O.K. The river float sounded cool. Shopping for jewelry, notta! Have a nice trip and watch your belongings the best you can at all times. Go with someone if you can. |

How about stepping outside of the bubble and doing something cool, like volunteer for a week:
Quote: |
TSUNAMI RELIEF CAMPS- The maximum VFP fee for ANY number of weekly relief camps is US$250. One Week Work Camps are offered every week starting on Mondays in the Tsunami hit area, along the coast of Ranong province. Greenway has established good rapport with the National Park in Laem Son as well as with the local fishermen in the same region. Relief camps will be organized every week. Arrivals every weekend in Ranong with the camp starting each Monday. Upon arrival each particpant will have to pay for the week ahead for the homestay/tentstay to the coordinator who will pay directly to the hosting family that is responsible for your food. Any funds left over will be used for local support. The fee payable in cash on arrival is US $ 70 for direct costs only. Groups and/or individuals are both acceptable in these camps. WORK The weekdays will consist of several working hours a day. At the camp, it will be discussed what work can best be done and has priority. You may have to report to just anyone on the Thai side (National park director, village heads, medical staff, Navy/military at work. Please cooperate. The daily schedule will depend on the knowledge, skills and personal interest of the group and off course on the weather. You will stay overnight in a villagers home to help them get income. Some may haveto stay in tents. You may bring a tent if convenient. We expect the participants to have creative initiative and discuss any problems immediately with the group leader; do NOT wait for the formal evaluations. As long as changes are within the limits of the aim of the camp, within our budget, supported by fellow volunteers and the local participants; changes are supported. T: Bangkok, then airflight or bus/train to Ranong. There are still doctors needed in the area-Especially general practitioners/family doctors and psychologists. IF you have these skills, please contact VFP at [email protected] and we will put you directly in touch with Greenway. |
The camp will have four male and four female volunteers from around the world.

Reena,
If you shop around, different travel agencies often have last-minute tour packages that are faxed in to them. Almost every place has something to Thailand. I lucked out and got one a few years ago, 7 days to Phuket: airfare, hotel, bus tours, and all meals for 280,000 won. (It was during the SARS crisis and nobody was going to Thailand.)
As someone above said, for 5 days you're better off going to just one place, such as Phuket, and staying there; and I'd definitely recommend getting out of Bangkok as fast as possible. |

Thanks for the tips!
Manner of Speaking, why do you say get out of Bangkok as fast as possible? I heard it's a great place to go. Do you remember which travel agency you went through?
Thanks,

Reena,
Maybe I'm biased...I've been to Bangkok 4 times now (my brother lives there), and although Khao San Road is interesting and there are some great temples and restaurants, I find Bangkok to be just too hot, noisy, crowded, and polluted. The bus or taxi ride in from the airport is a LONG trip, and Sukhumwit road, where many tourists seem to hang out, is just polluted and tacky. I haven't been to any other big cities, but the beaches and the countryside are much nicer. I can't recommend any particular travel agent, but just about any one that has English speaking staff can probably set you up with a nice trip.
Cheers,
MOS |

http://www.tourvacationstogo.com have a lot of different tours, although you would have to book the airfares separately here in Korea. The plus is that the tour would be all in English. |

5 days in Bangkok would be fine. You could veiw a bunch of temples, get massages, try the food and go to the markets.
I think if it were any longer, it would be better to split up the trip between Bangkok and another location in Thailand, but for your first trip there and for 5 days, it should be fine and lots of fun!
Koh-San road is a good place to center yourself from. Tons of guest houses and they are even travel agencies that will set up "around Bangkok tours" if you want to go that route. The street food is good (I never got sick) and really cheap. I think you can find plenty to do for your 5 days...probably 2 of those are "in and out" days going to/from the airport anyway.
Have fun! I really enjoyed Bangkok (and the rest of Thailand) |
