I wrote a new page this weekend. I haven't linked it to my general website yet because I want some input from Dave's posters. It's a tutorial guide for prospective ESL teachers in Korea.
Some of it will be a little controversial and I'm interested in some comments or criticism before I promote the page!

I skimmed it and it looked interesting.
All I can say, as I brought up in another thread just now, is that this is not a vegetarian country. Even kimchi has trace amounts of seafood (so says my girlfriend), and I know a vegan guy who lost 20 pounds in his first like three months. I'm tired of vegan people coming here and asking "So where's all the great vegan food?" I usually just point east and say "In Japan probably." |

I agree. There might be anchovy in some kimchis, especially Busan or Jeju varieties. There isn't much meat in traditional home cooking here, but because meat traditionally was scarce, not out of an enlightened or health decision. My students usually think of vegetarians as silly and vegans as crazy when I explain the distinction.

Hi Ken,
Good information there.
I especially liked what you had to say about women, pretty accurate coming from a man.
However, I would like you to add in that sexual assaults against foreign women are on the rise as of late....and that stats related to rape of such women are often 'lower', due to non-reporting, poor record keeping, and just do to the fact that its assault against a woman(ie not so important). Plus, Koreans don't want others to think badly of their country, sweep it all under the rug!!
Personally, I know of 9 recent cases of foreign women being sexually assaulted by K-men. So please add a warning to women to ensure that their doors/balconies are always locked, and if they are living in what they feel are unsafe areas/apts, they should request to be moved, or have bars installed. I have been told by Koreans not to spread the word to folks back home about this...b/c it makes Korea look bad, but we shouldn't have a false sense of security. So women, do we be very cautious. |
