There were indeed quite a lot of nasty jokes about Yoko when I was a boy, usually related to her ethnicity. But it may also be related to the fact that she, uh, wasn't exactly easy on the eyes to most men. When Lennon was having marital problems in the 70s there were newspaper photos of him with another Asian hottie in nightclubs, and there weren't any insults directed at her. Similarly, there were lots of Camilla joke when Prince Charles remarried, and they weren't related to her nationality but to her plainness.

On the other hand, maybe it's no better that people hated Yoko because she wasn't good looking enough for a Beatle. Is that all we care about?

Harrison once joked that the Beatles 'gave their nervous systems' to the public. Living in a media bubble and in hotel rooms for years would stress anyone, let alone creative musical types. I don't think Yoko helped (by the way, no one ever blames Linda McCartney for helping drive apart the Beatles, but she probably also put Paul ahead of the group), but I don't blame her for the breakup, but rather Beatle fatigue.

I'll be honest...

It wasn't until this thread came about that it ever even entered my mind that their might be racism behind peoples' dislike of Yoko.

I really only thought it was because she had no talent.

I must agree with MR about the "attractiveness" factor. Most guys have to be able to picture themselves with someone before they can accept someone else being with her. Not many guys can look at Yoko and say "Damn, she's fine."

They probably looked at her and said, "Damn. She has no talent and she looks like she fell through the ugly tree. What the hell is John Lennon doing with her? And The Beatles are breaking up? Ah, it must be that ugly girls fault."

I still don't think that it has anything to do with racism.

So, you admit that the fact she isn't the sexualized image of the stereotypical Asian woman had something to do with it? How can that not be seen as racism?

Doesn't your view that all Asian women shold be attractive make you the racist?

I'm not racist. I'm "uglyist." If she were white and still ugly I'd be saying the same thing. She's just ugly.

I disagree that there was a significant amount of spite directed at her because of the break up. I was in 3rd grade so I'll admit to not being too worldly at the time. My sisters were in junior high school and they had 45's and Teen Beat Magazine etc so I had access to reputable media. We didn't talk about her but the amount of press she got it just seemed like she was a distraction. If there there was a plethura of racist against her, they didn't survive although the disdain for her certainly has. As evidence of The West accepting things Japanese, I've listed a filmography of Godzilla whose career rise nearly paralleled that of the Beatles. Certainly little racism there.

The essay below is the one I have been writing

Below are the results of Googling "Yoko Ono Jokes". Its just the first five pages

Quote:

What's yellow and sleeps alone?
Yoko Ono.

"If I found her floating in my pool, I'd punish my dog."
- Joan Rivers on Yoko Ono

If Yoko Ono married Sonny Bono, she'd be Yoko Ono Bono.

"Is that feedback or is Yoko Ono singing?"

What would you find if you dug up John Lennon?
Four slugs and a dead Beatle.

Why did John Lennon get shot?
Yoko ducked.

What did Yoko say when Lennon was shot?
Ono - Ono - Ono.

What does a Photo-mat and Beatles reunion concert have in common?
There's no John.

What do Ethiopians and Yoko Ono have in common?
They both live off dead beatles.

What's rich, ugly and sleeps alone?
Yoko Ono.

What would it take to re-unite the Beatles?
Three more bullets.

What was John's last hit?
The pavement.

What song would John Lennon have wrote about his death?
He shot me Yeah Yeah Yeah.

Yoko Ono - Just Give Up Will You

Up until now Ive been content with watching rants appear until I saw one that sounded interesting, waiting for the JRI regulars to say something inflammatory, watching as silly young people fly off the handle and make fools of themselves without first thinking it through, then diving in myself to gleefully join the feeding frenzy and rip them apart.

Some might say Ive been shirking my responsibilities as a JRI contributor. I might agree, but its mainly because my personal distaste is spread thinly over a wide area of issues, and Ive never felt enough vehement outrage at any one subject to want to put it forward as a topic for ranting.

That is, until tonight.

Dont get me wrong, Im not a Beatles fan. Like most kids when I was at school, and didnt know any better, I thought I liked The Beatles. But then I thought Monty Python was funny back then too. If nothing else, Im grateful to The Beatles for showing me the way to the music of that period; for being the glossy, over-polished veneer that, once scratched off, revealed the quality of other bands beneath. So for that reason, I have never belonged to the school of thought that considers Yoko Ono to be the catalyst that brought about the end of the fab four, and curses her for taking them as a group away from the world. If you subscribe to this conspiracy theory, the worst she should be held responsible for is making Paul McCartney available to form Wings who would then be able to record such utter shit as Jet, Band On The Run, Coming Up, Mull of Fuckingtyre and the worst James Bond theme ever (alright its a close runner with the A-Ha one).

But no, not me. I dont hate her for any of those things.

Ill tell you what I hate the screeching, plastic-faced little harriden for: for using her hold over John Lennon while he was alive, and for constantly appearing like the shopkeeper from Mr Benn whenever her late husbands name is mentioned, for the sole purpose of promoting her own pathetic, miserable attempts at what she and the rest of the pseud-loving, goatee bearded world of wankers think they can palm off on the public as art.

Im sorry John, we know you were a working-class hero and all that, a bit of a revolutionary dead set against war, but no one really believed it was your idea to lie in bed in your own shit and piss for a week. It was hers. And thats not art Yoko, its just fucking stupid. When John performed Instant Karma live on Top Of The Pops, and she sat there blindfolded shouting out words written on cards, no one thought Wow, what groundbreaking performance art, they thought What does that stupid bitch think shes doing? She looks fucking stupid and shes spoiling the song.

Fortunately, I dont follow the art world, or indeed the career of no-hoper wannabes, closely enough to be able to catalogue every stupid stunt shes pulled over the years. But it doesnt matter. Because now I have had one almighty stupid stunt thrust, quite literally, into my face.

In the infinite wisdom of Liverpool City Council, or more precisely of some greasy little Northern Irish *beep* with Bald Head Long Hair Syndrome who sits on the council, huge banners displaying close-up, colour photographs of womens *beep* and minges (yes, minges) taken by YOKO ONO, are hanging all over the city centre from which there is no visual escape. Not only that, but I understand they are all over Liverpool Airport as well so they are the first thing to greet visitors to the area. Again please dont be hasty to judge me; I have no objection to the female form. Lord knows its a lot more attractive than the male form. But there is a time and a place for *beep* and clouts, and town centre shopping is not it.

Who is to blame? Should we blame Liverpool City Council? They claim the city should be more cosmopolitan as it is to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008. To that argument I say this: if you want Liverpool to be more cultured and more like the finer European cities, you need to concentrate on getting the chip wrappers, broken glass and multitudinous pools of vomit off the streets before you start hanging giant pictures of lumpy nipples and beaver close-ups everywhere.

No, I dont blame the Council. Theyre only doing what they think is right (albeit highly controversial). The blame should lie firmly at the door of the screaming Japanese dwarf who has been living off the corpse of John Lennon and squarely pissing into his open grave for over two decades, because without him she would be nothing more than a fourth rate photographer and street performer that everyone pitied for being not quite right and just a little bit sad.

Yoko Ono - Just give it up will you, and Ram It.

You mean a discussion on racism? Nah... not useful at all! Rolling Eyes

Now go back to the kiddy table and let the adults talk.

And Jane Fonda and cow-tipping are relevant, important topics to today's ESL teacher? Cool

What! I don't think all Asian women should be attractive. When have I ever written that?
