So it seems that every six months at camp season - the wages and conditions get worse.

It wasn't too long ago that you could get a camp job that would pay for your airfare. Many used to pay extremely well and they'd make it really worth your while financially to do them. But it's gets worse and worse everytime now.

I've just been sifting through some camp offers, and I have to say that I can't believe they expect to get people to work for this low pay. The average that I've seen sofar, for a 4week camp is around 2.6million and that involves mostly 8-10hr days mon-sat.

If you measure that by the hour, you're getting paid substantially less than you would at a normal hogwon job. Not to talk about the expense of coming over to Korea if you happen to be abroad and the enormous amounts of energy you put into working at a camp.

I worked a summer camp here that made an absolute PILE of cash. And they had to reject 100's of student applicatants because they didn't have enough space. I know too that these camps always have a chronic shortage of foreign teachers.

And yet again, like no other industry I know - the Korean ESL industry turns the laws of supply and demand on their head - and the pay being offered to experienced teachers to work camps goes down and down.

I'd be interested to know how many people here are thinking of working a camp this winter ? and how much they are expecting to get paid ?

I've landed a good camp position for Jan. (anyone know one in feb???) but I hear your points. What gets me is that Koreans always complain about the poor quality of the teachers, but refuse to give the pay and respect that i needed to get good teachers. Lets face it, if you buy a Hyundae Car, you have no right to complain that it does not drive like a Audi!, or even a Lada for that matter. You get what you pay for.

I think this is nonsense. While we all wish we were paid more, why do people realistically think that they should be paid more for a winter camp? If you get hired from overseas then the company is taking a risk. They will have no idea about whether you can teach or not. So why would they pay people more unless they were going to require demonstrations and such?

... It's not even about being paid more JZer, what I'm on about is the fact that we are paid significantly less per hour than you would be at a run of the mill hogwon.

Let's do the math

26 days * 10hrs day = 260 hours
2,600,000 / 260 = 10,000 won/hr

that seems to be about average ( or maybe a little bit below average) for some of the camps that I'm seeing. Camps work you hard and make aLOT of money. I really don't see the point in working for them for that kinda pay because you could make it somewhere else easier.
