about a month ago i got a virus from one of the torrents i downloaded....i used some antivirus software but it seemingly deleted a lot of necessary files on the computer as well. i don't have a legit copy of xp, but now i wish i did(though i don't know if that would have made a difference)
i downloaded a xp iso, burnt the image file and started the install. i ran the install on the c drive but it looks like it deleted some required files. my computer is completely screwed over now. i can't even get it to start in safe mode. i guess i should have written down the name of the file that is missing, but at this point i don't want to have to deal with it. i live in bundang and just want someone to reinstall xp on my hard drive and start all over. would anyone who lives near me be able to help me out (i would pay u of course) or recommend a repair shop nearby? thanks |

You just need to reinstall the OS. I've done that a few hundred times. There is an autoboot on the CD, you format to clean it up and then you just follow the instructions.
You can go to Johnny Computer if you really want to.
Good luck! |

You will be able to receive automatic updates and general free downloads (Windows Media Player for example), but on-demand updates will not work and you will not be able to download programs like Microsoft Anti-spyware. |

Depends on whether the serial key has been listed as being blocked or not. On some machines I've set up for people ages ago, they were able to get updates without issue as long as I stayed away from common serials. It seems that it only does the piracy check once, and once it's cleared it's good forever on that machine.
A few months ago, this dropped to about 50%. These days, none are working properly (though I just grab random serials from the Usenet. Using a program which generates random serials may have better luck). |

Just install ubuntu linux instead customX, it's probably even easier to install than windows is. And it runs smooth, you'll never have any virus or spyware issues which means you won't be back in the technology forum in a few weeks going "OMG my computer is acting really weird".
Give it a go ... what have you got to lose ??

| Just reinstall windows, if you play ANY games or use any software you really need windows. Ubuntu is cool, but its a pain in the ass to do anything with it. Ah hell, try the Live CD and choose for yourself. |

... ahh ... I think maybe that 's a bit of an exaggeration there demonicat.
I use 'software' on linux all the time and it works fine ...
As for the games bit ... how many games do you play OP ?
You might want to look into cedega at www.transgaming.com
I've heard some good things about it ... it's only about $30, .. time is money right - and you'll save yourself some time if you don't have to mess about with windows for eternity.
If you're a hard-core gamer though, I'd imagine sticking with windows is your best bet. But like demonicat says ... stick in the livecd and see how it goes... |
