Hi everyone

I'm jetting off to China/Southeast Asia shortly, and I need to know where in Seoul I should go to exchange cash Won for cash Chinese Yuan, cash US dollars, and travellers cheques (presumably also in USD). I'd rather not do this at the airport, as I'm sure the rates out there will be crap.

I don't live in Seoul so please give me some idea as to where the place is and what days of the week it is open.

Thanks!

Actually, believe it or not, the rates at the airport are exactly the same as any other bank in Korea.

If you want to do it ahead of time, though, KEB is probably your best bet..

TZ is right, the airport banks' rates are as good as all the banks (there are at least 3 different banks at the airport).

I believe it is possible to get a slightly better rate at the money exchangers around Itaewon but have never used them myself.

Hmmm.... When I went back in June, I bought both US and Cdn $ at a KEB then went directly to the airport. I noticed the exchange booths there were selling both currencies for about 15 won more. That's 30k won diff on $2000. Or am I missing something-are there actually banks in the airport as well?

There are full branches of Woori, KEB, and Shinhan (at least) on B1. The booths may be different banks, I do not know for sure, as I have always dealt with Woori and Shinhan branches.

Okay, let's say I go with KEB. Are exchange rates the same at branches all over the country, or can there be variations between Seoul and other, smaller cities? And is there a KEB in Itaewon?

Of course!
If you get off at Itaewon station, get out near the hamilton hotel and walk toward noksapyong station in that direction. You will see a Nike Golf store on your right and inside that building (on the second floor) is the KEB Itaewon Branch.
I would go there for the traveller's cheques, but not to exchange money.
I go to an exchange shop that is at the Pizza Hut building, the ladies there are nice and they seem to give a good rate from Won to other currencies.
The drawback to using a bank/ airport exchange booth is that they usually ask for your passport and they stamp the transaction there, sometimes that can hinder any future exchanges- at least from my experience.
