not sure if this belongs in the CE section, but I thought it might be of interest to some here.

I couldn't find any American Myths at that link, just a prerss release for a tv series.

The series sounds like it would be a good counter-balance to the prevailing Molson nationalism, but unfortunately I don't get the channel it's on. Sad

Thanks for posting that S-man, I definitely want to find out more about this series.

Quote:
"American Myths" also endeavourers to bring forward a range of ideas and perspectives about what constitutes Canadian identity and how we can confront the challenges we face, as opposed to defining Canadian interests and identity simply in opposition to the US.

This could be the most constructive part of the series.

The only people I meet that are anti-canadian are:

1) contributors to this board
2) fellow americans who have done the "backpacker" thing who have met a few too many whiny Canadians on their travels.

I've never met anyone in my travels bitch about American travelers (note: I haven't spent much time in Europe nor ever been to Latin America), but heard a few compliments about us.

I guess my point is I find it a bit ironic that canada, with its global positive image is hurt by some of its expats and travelers, while America, with its rather negative image these days, is helped by them to a small extent. Unfortunately for us Americans, not many of us travel and/or work overseas.

And yes, I'm generalizing. I know there are plenty of ugly american tourists out there and most Canadians don't bash America on a routine basis nor are overly patriotic.

There is about a 97.2% chance of this one turning into yet another US vs Canada thread. I'm just about to wet my pants in anticipation. We haven't had one of those is almost a month.

re: the travellers.
In my time travelling, i've met a lot from both countries.
I can't say i have had any/many problems with americans but canadian have pissed me off. I felt really awkward at the mud festival this year when a girl in our "group" started giving these soldier guys a hard time about being from the US. I mean, they certainly egged her on no doubt, but damn, why do people do that? It makes you look so fooking stupid. place of origin should NEVEr matter if you'r trying to make friends, or at least be civil to people

damn

As a Canadian Ive spent a lot of time traveling around the U.S. to watch football. The people have always been more than nice to me.

My issue is with other Canadians who insult the U.S. while Canada sits back when push comes to shove. Our military must be the smallest and least equipped per capita than any other industrialized nation in the world. .

Does this sound familiar.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself
to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very
freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I
provide it. I'd prefer you just said thank you and went on
your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and
stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you
think you're entitled to.

A $1000.00 pay cheque in Canada turns into $600.00 after the welfare cheats; subsidized housing trolls and permanently medicated folks take their chunk. I thank America for doing our part in the world because if we have to replenish our army that $600.00 would be about $400.00.

yup...canada is pretty low...i wouldn't say disproportionately compared to the MAJORITY of the world. I think it's important to put things into a global perspective.

The US spends an incomparable amount of money on defense compared to canada...the first link points this out in a most obvious manner.

As a note: I'm not commenting on the US spending of money... just showing some stats for jawinseoul.

those damn old people...
seriously, don't even get me started on them...or cancer patients? Geez, i'm seeing red just THINKING about it!!!

I hate it when Canadians rant on and on about how crappy america is to really great americans. That friends have to put up with that crap. Usually if i'm around, i help to make a scene

One thing you need to know about Canadians: we don't think all Americans are hosers. If we did, we wouldn't have let you get so much of our electricity, beer, wood, wheat, beer, hockey players, and beer, eh? Laughing

Haha, that post is really funny. Yes, the US is doing the whole world such a big favour, isn't it? Canada's far from the greatest country on earth and it's government is screwed up in some ways, but it's still a lot less worse than the US. The average American spends more on health care than the average Canadian. We waste money on welfare, they waste money on useless wars and military toys. Both nations have more than their share of ignorant fools. The one positive thing I'll say about American travellers (and I've met both really nice people and complete morons) is that the 80% most ignorant and boorish Yanks don't own a passport, whereas that's not the case with Canadians, Aussies, and especially Kiwis.

I'm doing a skit with my middle schoolers for a speaking contest about a big, fat, stupid American who comes to visit Korea. It's pretty fun. The girl playing the American is doing a great job. 'You mean you speak Korean? Is your home in North or South Korea? You wanna hold hands? You're not a lesbian are you? Not that there's anything wrong with that..."

Could someone please tell me what the difference is between saying this and someone saying, "Do you live in an igloo?"

You're just as ignorant as any American. Maybe more so. Also, it's obvious you've met very few Americans, maybe none. Or maybe you base your opinion of America on the 19-year old border jumpers who shove off to Canada to drink earlier. That's wisdom, folks.

I tell you what, though. 99.9% of the fat people I've met in Korea have been Canadians. Therefore, if you keep doing skits like this, you'll keep the Koreans coming up to you Canadians saying "Miguk saram" because, obviously, only Americans are fat.

So, you keep your stereotypes about all Americans being fat, stupid rednecks, and we'll keep our stereotypes about all Canadians being igloo-dwelling, oot and aboot, pot-head, gay nutjobs who live off the crumbs that the US drops off the table and secretly tell racist jokes about people from Pakistan.

Gosh, this stereo-typing is fun!

When I went back to visit Canada the first time, I was asked by several Canadians if I was teaching in North or South Korea.

From their skit:

Marge: I'm really getting tired. I thought you said you lived close to the station.
Minji: I do - only about three kilometers.
Marge: Kilometers? How many miles is that?
Minji: I believe a mile is 1.6 kilometers, so that would be about 2 miles.
Marge: Two miles! You walk this far every time you go to the station?
Minji: I walk that far twice a day. How do you get around in America?
Marge: If I have to walk any further than the end of my driveway, I take my SUV. Heck, sometimes I even use my SUV to get the mail.
