Wow. What a difference.

This is the unit to get: Linksys WRT54G. Mine is the version 4 made in September (you can read that on the bottom of the unit, and the box near the UPC symbol). I am really happy. It cost me 70,000 won at Youngsan, and it is fast, has excellent range, and works well through walls. I can sit on the toilet and surf Dave's! I couldn't do that with the other wifi system I had.

Setup is very good, and support is the best, according to all that I have read online. Best of all, everything is in English. Wow.

I can even sit on the porch outside and surf. I highly recommend this unit. Some guy was thinking of adding wifi to his coffee shop. I suggest this.

I don't doubt you.

They are on version 5 now (mine is version 4, and not sure what the difference is between 4 and 5, but it apparently isn't anything special from what I read, and is a special functionality difference for interoffice encryption).

The early versions of these things often have bugs or setup issues. That is why it's not always the best idea to buy into such items immediately when they are the new, un-updated version.

This one is far enough along now that it's great and has the major flaws fixed.

Oddly enough, after searching the web, the Version 5 of my router actually removes a bit of functionality (although in things that 99% of us wouldn't bother using). This functionality, being able to use certain 3rd party software items to adjust and tweak the router. I guess Linsys was getting upset that people were using some other software or something.

That, and they lowered the power supply to 3.3 volts intead of 5+-.

Anyway, version 4 or 5 doesn't seem to matter a lot here. Just figured out WPA2 encryption, and have installed that now.

As long as you keep current with your BIOS upgrades you should be okay.

The 2.2 bersion had some hardware issues. I had to tweak the router to get it to work right. Hasn't given me any troubles for some time now.

Do you guys think that lowering the voltage could also lower the power output of the unit?

If so, they wouldn't be the first in the computer world to introduce a 'new and improved' model that costs more money, while downgrading the functionality of their older products to make the newer product seem better.

Some have criticized Netgear for their newer line of routers, which some say have less range and cheaper plastic styling. Of course, you can get the more expensive model with the 'longer' range, which happens to be similar or not much better than the old model used to be.

No, you can/should be able to control the output strength from the setup/config of the router. I can with my Netgear WiFi router.

I also do not have any problems with Netgear. Also, its all in English so its all good!! Smile
