Looks like I got a nasty virus. Windows won't start, and when I check the directory from the dos prompt, all the windows files look corrupted. I am going to be doing a clean install, but it has been a while since I have done this. I will be using Windows 98SE cause I got an older sytem. Now if I remember correctly...

Step 1: Format C: drive

Step 2: Make sure bios is booting from disk first, start up computer with boot disk (Dos/Windows boot disk??? Don't actually have one. Which do I need, and does anybody know where I can download the one I need)]

Step 3: Install cd-rom driver (found a universal dos cd-rom driver)

Step 4: Put in my Windows CD and start installing.

If anyone sees anything wrong with this plan, please let me know. Any info about the bootdisk would be great. Thanks in advance.

Plan B: Start by ditching 98se. If your computer can't meet minimum requirements to run 2K then remove the hard drive and ditch it as well. Get something half-decent, used or otherwise, and make sure it's up to date in terms of security and a/v. Then you can hook up the old infected drive, run an a/v scan on it and lift off any crucial data and settings.

Sorry if the above sounds somewhat harsh but I can honestly only view a re-format of a C: drive and a re-install of 98se as an utter waste of your time.

Anyway, if you're determined then here's your boot disk:

Thanks for the links...just what I needed.
You seem a bit bitter about the old system though Razz
I'm actually getting a new system next year, but I am going to be out of Korea for a couple months in between. This one is a freebie and works just fine for word processing and surfing the net.

Not at all, 98se was great in its day, but part of your virus problem could very well be due, at least partially, to the fact that you are running an outdated operating system.

If you haven't already done so make sure your HD is partitoned so that the data and o/s don't reside on the same partition.

Didn't know the h/d was the only thing needing upgrading - likely have to upgrade the MoBo, RAM, video card, and CPU. (and the P/S!), Ops and the PC case.
Win 98SE is just fine for what the guy does. Hell, I used it till last year, when I was 'forced' to switch because apps I wanted to use didn't support 98.

Why bother if Win XP/(2K, I think you said) is THE solution? Just a waste of h/d space. Did I hear some-one say, back-up?

If you use caution on what you download/open the risk of viruses is very very low. I get sooooooooooooooooooo tired of people using the Virus bogeyman. Now, lets all cry Wolf.

Not that anyone cares, but...
Reinstalled Widows 98SE, got all my drivers and such up, and computer is running fine.

I fully agree with this. While I am probably going to get a spanking new computer eventually, for now my sytem is just fine. PIII, but once I added a bunch more RAM and replaced the video card, it did everything I need. I only really use it for the Internet, word processing, and a few low end games. Anyways, thanks again for the help.

I started to edit my response but kept running into the phpBB error and said *beep* it. What I meant was not upgrade the HD but throw away everything else but the HD (i.e. keep the data). IMO a pc that can't meet the minimum specs of W2K is not worth upgrading- you might as well start from scratch (except for, one more time, say it with me now- the data). Of course by the op third post it becvame clear that they weren't concerned about a new o/s or the obsolescence of their machaine as they just wanted to surf and email for a few more months.

As for being 'forced' to drop 98se only last year, all I can say is "Dude, WTF?" Confused

My ex used to say the same thing, "don't listen to what I say, do as I mean" Confused WTF is right. Razz

I would replace the H/D as well - why bother keeping a H/D that is probably near its life-span, likely too small, and most likely slow when compared to new drives?

It's not the hardware, it's the data the h/w holds.
My contact lists, resumes, pictures, music etc. is worth more to me than the best system on the market, which is why I protect it.
I was guessing that the OP had no such protection and would eventually (i.e. once he had a new system, fully updated/patched, chock full of a/v goodness and ready to clean an infected HD) want to recover the data. And again, the OP has already made it clear that this is not the case.
