Hey all...
Back home I really enjoyed my stereo system... like having an amp, speakers... surround sound... sub woofer... all that kind of jazz.
Whats is like down here for that kind of stuff?
I mean back home it was easy enough to head down to Futureshop or a local store and pick up a deal on an amp/reciever or some speakers...
Has anyone here gone out and built a system... got any good online resources for speakers or anything? How are the prices compared to North America?
I'd like to stress I don't want to pick up one of those all in one packages out of a box... I'd prefer to select the individual components myself.
Thanks alot! |

Prices here are a lot higher for quality stuff. Robbery, in my opinion.
The Koreans really harrang the foreign electronics companies with import taxes so they can overcharge for their own stuff. Check on www.enuri.com and you can find stereo stuff. If you are not sure how to navigate the menus, you can type the english in the search part, and maybe get lucky.
Prices have come down compared to a few years ago, but they are still high. And if you want to buy a decent sub that's larger than 8", you will pay up the butt for it. Nearly 2 times as much as elsewhere. |

Stores (at least in Yongsan, where I looked) often have 2nd hand equipment at a much more reasonable price.
Or you can try the 'recycle' shops, which clean-up and over-haul equipment.
Or get a decent computer 5.1 system - prices are more competitive, but still higher than in the 'West'.
Or prowl around in the evenings - not uncommon to spot equipment people have tossed. Got much of my stereo system that way; all separate components; tuner, cassette, CD, equalizer, power amp, and speakers |

I seen a lot of high-end hi-fi on one floor in Yongsan. Very easy to spend 10,000,000 won on a system there.
Next time I go back home I'm going to price the cost of surface mailing my very nice seperates system to Korea. Might be cheaper than buying here. |

Well... what I found on the site there seemed ok to me at least. I mean some of the prices were really high... but some were ok. I don't need the best system in the world or anything. But those speakers are ok in price, and the review online seemed good enough for me. Amps I also found on that site that were reviewed well were similar in price.
So I'm planning to just make that first purchase of speakers and amp. I already have a DVD player, and plan to port my PC into the system for music. Not sure if I really want to go die hard with a surround sound system, although I certainly do have the room to do it in my apartment.
I'm thinking that I want to get my basic set up first, and those speakers I think would be able to handle most of my needs.
Now all I got to do is get a XBOX 360 down here... and all will be well. |

Every country has import taxes. Unless Korea has 100% import tax, that is not the real reason for the high prices. |

Need some opinions... what would you guys do?
The basic tower speaker set for 450,000 won. Which are pretty bad ass on their own... I mean they weigh at least 20 lbs each.
OR...
Get the package deal... all the same model number and stuff... tower speakers, center speaker, sub, and rears for 890,000.
I'm kinda leaning towards getting the package deal... the whole kit and kaboodle so to speak...
What do you all think?

Looks really nice. Not sure how it sounds. My ears aren't nearly as attuned as they were 10 years ago. That's what stinks about getting old.
I've never found a subwoofer smaller than 12" that impressed me. Seriously. I never understood the point of having anything smaller than that, because 10" and below... especially 8"... sounds more thumpy than anything.
Can you get a deal on everything but the sub, and buy a separate sub from another company? At those low frequencies, matching speaker brands isn't important.
And I keep laughing inwardly, wondering if they're named 360 in the hopes that people will build them around their x-box 360, or something. |

Yeah they have a deal minus the sub... good advice there... thanks.
Funny you should mention that about the 360... but they have been out there for a while now... just check the link to CNET if your keen.
From what I read they seem pretty good... so I think I'm going to wait till I finish my overtime work and see how much extra cash I have lying around.
Thanks again for the help... |

Try copying and pasting this in the search browser on enuri:
서브우퍼
That is Korean for subwoofer. You'll get a list of 'em all the way up to 8 million won +! |

Um... Don't hit me, but my first piece of advice is, unless you lust for some big-ass, kick-ass, multi-million-won audio system, then you should look into the all-in-one packages that you abhor. Just listen to a few. They don't come in only one flavour ("crap") anymore, and the days when you could dismiss HTIB (home theatre in a box) as the low-fidelity, poor-man's make-do for a real system are long gone. Three reasons: (1) You can now pay more for an HTIB than for some lower-end, hand-picked component systems, and they work together as well. (2) The HTIB market is simply too big, the price-performance level too high, and the range of big-name manufacturers who are getting into this popular niche too broad. (3) Give me (or you) some time, a reasonable budget for acoustic wall applications, and proper speaker positioning, and you'll have most higher-end HTIB systems sounding as good as most separate systems, but for 1/2 ~ 1/4 the price.
I test systems with my eyes closed.

Hey... no worries at all... I'm always open to advice.
Do you have any suggestions at all for systems I could find in Korea? |
