|
|
Hi guys,
I'm torn between here or Taiwan next year and I, like countless thousands before me am looking into uni work.
So here's the deal.
I'll be 24 (K age) in Febuary and will finish my first year here in May. I've been working at a girls middle school in Incheon and have been given a lot of praise on my lessons and teaching technique from all my coteachers. I've also been offered a renewal of my contract already. My degree was from the University of Southampton where I got a dual honours in Economics and Management Science (2.1).
So what are my chances of landing a uni job? Any hints/tips? |

You wouldn't be able to get a job at my uni because of your age, experience, lack of an MA and country of origin. They only hire 30+ here, 3+ years of EFL in a foreign country, MA and US/Canada only.
My advice is to send out as many rez as possible and if you don't get any bites, start door knocking in mid January as that's when they have to fill their positions and some instructors who either said they were comig back or accepted offers, take other jobs. Then the uni starts to panic and if you're in front of them and come across well you may scoop the job. Of course the downside of this is that to qualify you can't have another job and if you're not successful in finding anything then you have to scramble to get something else depending on your financial situation.
My advice would to be get at least another year or 2 of experience and if you can manage it, an MA online |

My uni is 8 Canadians, 8 Americans and 2 Brits. 9 BA's, 8 MA's and one Ph.D. We've hired Kiwis and Irish in the past, too. The last guy hired was a 25 yr-old American with a BA, although he does speak Korean quite well.
There's hope, hang in there. |

I also thought that University jobs required a Masters (could be MS or MA). I thought that this was an Immigration directive, so I am surprised that some Universities can hire with BA only. I just got a University job with no prior TEFL experience, so experience is not a necessity. One reason was that they like my Engineering degree and want me to teach Engineering writing. And we do have Aussies, here; so I don't think that America and Canada is a direct requirement. But we do stress American English over British, so that could be somewhat true. Koreans do favor American English; I guess because of the proximity and the number of Koreans that study in America.
That's my 2 cents, now one question.
Do Taiwan University teachers get the 21 weeks vacation like Korea University Teachers? Sorry for additional question and I don't mean to hijack your thread. Maybe you could give me a quick answer if you know.
Thanks,
Drew |

i am the only MA holder at my Uni. Oh, of course all of our Korean teachers have MA's from places like McGill and Temple. The certainly can work with a BA in a Uni. Also one of our most poplular teachers was hired when he was 22.
Taiwan I hear is a different story. I am almost certain that to teach in a Uni there you must have an MA TESOL or M ED. |

I think you could get a job at a university. Alot of it comes down to the interview. If you're personable and sharp you could get a uni gig. The one problem I see for you is the end date of your current contract. Universities hire for March start dates. If you don't finish until May and really want uni work you could wait for the August hiring period. Maybe take a short term contract until August and then apply for university positions then. Anyways, good luck on getting a university job. There are plenty out there but beware of steadily declining conditions.
Cheers |
