See ya, Georgie.
Reaction here.
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
"I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World."
"I was in for 10 hours and had 40 pints - beating my previous record by 20 minutes."
The man was a frickin' legend.

Has any footballer ever had a more apt surname?
R.I.P. George.
If there is a footballing heaven, I think God is now officially allowed to play for the home side (to give them a chance).
The Best.
Legend. |

RIP.
In sport, if there was ever a flame that burned too bright for far too short a time, it was his.
God Bless you Georgie |

To my fellow Belfast man. Good luck George. You almost made me support Man U. when I was a kid!!
He's still the only player I've ever seen who could make the referee stand back and applaud!! A natural.

CNN has spent a whole day paying hommage to this man.
As an American, I know Maridona (sp?) and Pele but have never heard of this guy. I also don't follow soccer history that much.
Anyone in the same boat? |

He's not internationally known because he never got to a World Cup. His home country being Northern Ireland and they rarely qualify. But in Europe he is very well known.

Agreed. I forgot how good he was. The way he rides those brutal tackles defenders used to do is amazing. That was one of the great things about him. He wouldn't go down if he could stay on his feet and keep running.
People make a lot of fuss about Rooney, Owen, Beckham etc. They can't do anything like Best used to do. He was in a different class. |

I met his "girlfriend" in Australia one time, a stunning blonde. The one before Ros Hollidge.
She was a real star, nobody could keep their eyes off her, we shared a drink and got onto the subject of George best one time (happened to be staying at the same hotel in perth). She lived in the same street as him and he pestered her to go out with him a lot...ultimately she gave in because of the sheer fame and reputation of him, but ultimately was turned off by his age and his drinking. |

wow. i don't know beans about football but i watched that video and feel sad that i missed out on knowing about something... the guy was a jedi.
sports are generally wack but when you see someone who plays like that, you see that they qualify as an art form sometimes. |
