hey

my harddrive tanked and i want to put all my music back on my computer.

does anyone know their way around ipod hacks? i hadn't considered it because i heard it voids your warranty... but then it sounds like ipod warranties are a bit of a crapshoot anyways.

any info?

There are hacks available for the iPod to transfer music, but unfortunately I don't know where to get them. Mostly people use them to swap music from computer to computer, using the iPod as a portable harddrive. Usually they require messing with the firmware and if you don't know what you're doing you can fry it. And yes, that will void the warrenty. I imagine if you do some sort of search you should be able to come up with something. But like I said, tread carefully. If it's a hardware problem, Apple should fix it, but if you tell them "Well I was trying to hack it to transfer my music", what do you think they'd say?

But, I know they exist. They even mentioned them on TechTv once, but did not divulge where to find them, probably for legal reasons.

i've figured out a way to use my ipod as a hard drive and i can just drag and drop from the ipod_control folder.

crappy thing is, the files get renamed with all these weird sorta acronym file names. i guess they'd still look the same in itunes, but i am going to keep searching for a way to do this without having to INDIVIDUALLY RENAME NEARLY 3000 MP3s and die a slow death.

there's a few programs i have found like anapod and ephpod that seem like they could do it but they need a bit of tweaking.

if i find out definite info i'll post it here, it's probably something that should be known.
