How does one go about it? I just bought a PC and currenlty have a laptop. As for the internet, I will take care of that. However, I do not know how to link the PC's together so I can pull from one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A router is probably your best choice - then you'll also have internet access for both computers with one connection as well as being able to shunt files back and forth.

Get a second network card put into the desktop. Install internet sharing. Connect the two with a crossover cable (available at any computershop or even homeplus. (Cross over cable not just 10bT).
Works with win98 or winxp.
This is cheaper and easier than buying a router for just 2 computers.
Alternatively you can buy a hub and connect them throught the hub (about 20k won) or a router for 60k+ won.
At home here I used 2 cards in the desktop. One card connects to the internet. The other card connects with a cross cable to a hub (21k won at homeplus for the crossover cable and hub).
I connect my 2 laptops to the hub with short runs of ether cable. Works like a charm. Plug and play easy and all 3 can share the internet with only 1 IP address.

A wireless router is a better choice since the OP has a laptop.

I would also say get a router, since it gives you added security against the outside.
