I understand the Korean language doesn't use articles and it's very confusing for kids when to use a/an/the. Now what I find curious is, while my students almost universally avoid using an article when an article is needed, almost all of them use articles when you don't need them.

For example:

"I have hand phone."

"I am from the Korea."

They never bloody use articles except when talking about countries and cities. Suddenly they slap on "the". I can only attribute this to the American influence. "The United States". The exception they hear so much they assume it's the rule.

Maybe that's why! Interesting idea.

I'll have to bring that up ("the ____ of _____" grammar form) when a student makes that mistake next time, just to be sure.

I had a massive success with a grammar auction, the kids buy incorrect sentences and have to correct them to get points. I did a lot on an and when it came to the answers we went over all of rules about a,an,the.

Worked really well, last week we did a jeopardy quiz and all the kids were clamouring to fill the blank with the right preposition.

That's hilarious. I get that a lot, too. "Teacher, look at the Jason!" I kinda like it. It adds a little bit of oomph to someone's importance.

Blunder can you PM me about the auction, please. You've told me about it before, but I don't really understand. I wanna try it.

The Q.
