My wife is wondering what Korean teachers make. She works at a hagwon, but I'd be interested to know what kind of wages come to public school teachers as well. Anybody have any idea?

From my third-hand knowledge, less than a foreigner at a hogwon but more than a Korean teacher at a hogwon. Pay is calculated based on education and years of experience (as it is in Canada). The numbers I heard were that a beginner teacher makes 1.5 m a month, and a very experienced one 2.5 m a month. There are additional bonuses and benefits that we don't get, but they also "work" longer hours. Teaching is a popular gig in Korea right now, but because they have incredible job security, not because of the pay.

If you're a Korean teaching TOEIC or TOEFL, University / high school students or have a good name for yourself, you commonly rake in, get this: HALF of ALL tuition.

I was working at a place where the teacher had classes with 40-50 students in it. Multiply this by 5 or 6 & the $$$ starts addding up pretty quickly.

Nice double standard eh?

From what I have seen 1.5-1.9. So low native teacher pay, but they don't get housing, and they have to deal with those annoying parents a lot more

From what I can tell, public school teachers get paid quite well, better than the foreigners.

Public school teachers start at 2 mil a month(first year) and get raises every year.

One of the grade one teachers showed me his paystub and he was making about 3.8 a month. Keep in mind he has been teaching for over 30 years.
