Parents question constitutionality of law banning mobile phones in exams
A parents' group said yesterday that it will file a petition with the Constitutional Court against the Education Law over the disqualification of about 30 students for carrying mobile phones and other banned electronic devices during the state-run college test last week.

Or rather, welcome to the newspaper where they print the publication date with the article. That date simply means that the article will appear in the Nov. 29th print ediition. No big deal. Stop griping over every little detail.

I'm shocked, truly shocked, that there are enough over-protective Korean parents to form a group. Really and truly shocked. All along I've been thinking I was in a country where the parents were just as sane and reasonable as the parents back home....Oh wait a minute. They are pretty much the same.
Oh well. Never mind. |

So when you go dining with Koreans, it's perfectly OK to pour your own drinks, accept and give with one hand, and blow your nose at the table?
Who cares about every little detail? |

Well these students were idiots. Everyone knows perfectly well that you do not take a handphone or mp3 player or any sort of digital recording device to the exam. The warnings are clear and numerous. There are lots of college programmes you can get into without the CSAT - don't waste a year moping and waiting to try again - just get on with your life and be lucky you're not facing criminal prosecution.
My guess is that some of these cases were students who don't really need the CSAT and just brought along toys to entertain themselves, and students who really need the CSAT and had a recording device were more likely to have more sinister motives. |

anyways, moving on to the article, what do people think? in some ways i think a one year ban is justified, they broke the rules, and may have had intent to cheat. not letting them take it next year sends a more powerful lesson that intent to cheat is not ok (which they do here so much).
on the other hand, if they were just unfortunate enough to really foget, i can understand teh complaint. but then, when I took the SATs, I remember I made sure to get a proper night sleep, double check and triple check the time, have a whole case of number two pencils, ask about calculaters, etc... why? because i didnt want something like this happening because i simply forgot about something.
so maybe the one year ban is justified, they knew the rule, they understood it, the rule was there for a clear and reasonable purpose, tough luck... |

Trust me, they knew the rule, they understood it, and the rule was there for a clear and reasonable purpose. And they *didn't* 'just forget' to leave their handphones behind with their homeroom teachers when the latter made a careful point of collecting them beforehand and making it clear what would happen if they were caught wtih one. |

Tough luck, indeed. They knew the rules and they voluntarily broke them. Tough luck. |

Christ, they were DQ'd for bringing their cells? When I took the SATs (waaaaay back in'9 we weren;t alloed to bring those or advanced calculators- but if we did they'd just take them at the door and return them on the way out. Wow, a year DQ seems a bit much. |

I'm pretty sure that they were supposed to check them at the door, but didn't. If they had checked them at the door or wherever they were supposed to leave them, no problems. But they took them into the tests.
