| I have still heard nothing about this. Does it only apply to those working in Seoul? Has anyone working outside Seoul, and under the jursidiction of immigration offices outside Seoul had to do this yet? |
I'm in Busan and had the form supplied to me by my hakwon a week or two ago.
Earlier this afternoon I ran it down to the Busan Immigration office.
They had a stack of what must have been four or five hundred of the forms already filled out and submitted.
In addition, they produced a monster checklist of what must have been thousands of teachers in the Busan area. Are there really so many of us?
A completely perfunctory affair: The official simply glanced at my form, asked for my ARC, glanced at that before handing it back, then looked up my name in the monster list, highlighted it in yellow, and put a date stamp in the margin.
With so many people involved, I'm surprised that this isn't a huge issue here on the forums. My best guess as to why is that most teachers are simply thinking, "Ho hum, whatever."

You mean that the whole thing is a charade? No!!!! I'm shocked. |
I'm not saying that THE WHOLE THING is a charade, only that my own brief visit to Busan Immigration was perfunctory in nature.
This being Korealand, Christ only knows what will come. Nothing, likely as not. But would it truly surprise you if teachers who HAVEN'T submitted the form by some possibly undefined deadline find themselves being hauled off and deported, whether or not the thing was ever sent them?
I hear it being said that it's only the "suspicious" teachers who are receiving this form, but if anything suspect the opposite. How about . . . you receive this form, turn it in, and Immigration LOOKS ELSEWHERE for its next targets?
Likely as not they WILL try phoning up a few of our universities, only to discover that none of them will verify graduation or attendance information over the phone. This will result in huge consternation, pulling of hair, uttering of profanities, a conclusion that waygook universities are locked in conspiracy against the great Korean people (who with 5000 years of history under their belts should of course be deferred to as seniors), and at very long last the decision to issue
YET ANOTHER FORM!
This being Kimchiland, once again . . . |

I turned in the form~ though I'm strongly against it because it empowers Koreans to be more bold when dealing with foreigners. The more people allow this sort of thing to continue, the more Koreans will take advantage of the situations and cause more pain to us.
As people have said; this is their land, not ours.
And it is because of this believe, they feel that they can push us around as much as they want, anytime they want, knowing we will not do anything about it because it is under the guise of law.
What most of us don't know is that Koreans themselves don't follow their own laws and fight them any chance they get and sometimes, they win. Why can't we do the same? Most of us grew up thinking that as citizens, we are obliged to follow the laws of our homelands. But for some of us expatriates, KOREA IS OUR HOME.
And we deserve the benefit of the doubt by calling on the government when we see something that hurts OUR interests.
So there are a few bad apples in the ESL industry- there are a few apples in ALL industry. It is up to the companies to weed them out and to bring in more qualified people.
The more the government does something like this, the more harm it would cause us.
I am leaving soon, it hurts me to do so because I have made Korea my home for the last 10 years or so. I have tried to make Korea my home, but with all that is going on, I prefer to go to greener pastures- or should I say, deserts |

This is a joke. One of my friends works at the Registers office in Northern California. He got a call from Korea to verifiy some Information about a person in Korea.
He kindly explained to him the procedures to do this. A written auth. and signed auth from from the person who attended their university. The person on the other line informed him, that he had to give them this information or he would be reported to the U.S. Department of Education. He just gave his name and hung up the phone. |

I popped this into its own thread; figured a cross-reference here wouldn't hurt . . .
Heya ~
I had just gotten these in work at my place (Bun-dang hakwon, near Mi-geum Station) yesterday. Followed up & read the 2 threads; thought people might prefer to cut through all the other stuff & see exactly the 2 letters.
So, I scanned them (nice to occasionally use the thing!), and put them up on my website. Here is the link; it shoooulldd take you directly there, and I would hope you don't have to sign in:

if you do have to sign in, try here:

If someone is feeling industrious, feel free to take the images & slap them directly into this thread.
Regards,

| I just did it today. Only I went to Suwon Immigration. And they never asked for even my ARC. I walked up to the desk, handed in the confirmation paper, they said "OK"...and that was that. |
I also did it in Suwon. Was surprised they didn't ask for ANY documentation.
I suppose he saw my passport when I copied the number, though.
And I left the contact number and recruiter sections blank. |
