Hey Guys,
I'm fairly new to the board, and I've done nothing so far but ask people to help me out, so I thought I'd give back a little.
Take the following review with a grain of salt..I didn't write anything down while dining, so the exact description of items and prices may vary slightly. I'm in no way affiliated with this restauarant.. I just enjoy sharing my finds with people.
On a side note, if you have any constuctive criticism on my writing, thats cool, too. Just keep it light.
Avorig
A few nights ago, I had a dining epiphany in Itaewon: It's possible to get fresh, foreign flavors in the Hermit Kingdom, at semi reasonable prices!
The name of the place is either Avorig or Arvorig (some help?), and it is located in Itaewon. It bills itself as French dining, but I found the menu had too much depth to be tied down to that label. It spanned the globe from aromatic, cubed, sultry East Afican, tame but wonderful Kiwi lamb, and solidly European gruelish dishes.
The amazingly fresh oysters, at around 8,000 for a half dozen or 15,000 for a dozen, are a superb (if somewhat pricey) choice for appetizer.
The Warm Duck on Baby Greens are a better buy, at 8000 for the appetizer sized portion, and somewhere around 15 for the dinner.
For dinner, the way to go is the Royal Couscous. It's beyond words, so I won't try. Around 22 for the dinner.
Also good is the Mixed Grill, which comes with a leg of chicken, a nice cut of lamb, and a bit of steak. I'm not sure of the cuts, as I forgot to ask..but it is by far the best meat I've had in my (relatively short) time here. Around 29,000 for a LOT of great meat, and a choice of sides +salad.
They also have a ton of desserts, but I'm not much of a dessert guy. Someone want to step in on that front?
The wine list is fairly extensive, and reasonably priced. No bargains, but some pretty nice finds at prices that won't break you.
I had a glass of Shiraz for 6 bucks, my buddy had a better Merlot for 8.
This place is really worth a shot. The chef is a wonderfully French guy, who describes dishes as "magnifique" and happily guides you through ordering.
The atmosphere is also a treat, with soft, warm lighting, and a variety of comfy chairs and tables to choose from. It's not cheap, but I've had some MUCH worse food in Korea for a lot more money than I spent here.
To find it, take the Subway to Itaewon station. I can't recall the exit number, but its the same one as for the Hamilton. Walk up about a block until you're across from the big hill that goes up towards hooker and homo hill. It's the street that winds up towards the Hyatt. The restaurant is just a short walk up that street.
If anyone can throw up some better directions, go for it. To anyone who gives it a shot, why not add your two cents?

It's behind Ms. Jeon's dress shop which is across from Sandpresso.
And I wasn't all that thrilled with it. I had overpriced fish wrapped in aluminum and some vegetables. No placemats. Bad European pop music. The waiter had really foul BO, and it didn't really have a relaxing atmosphere. The apple tart I had was good, and the foreign guy that worked in the kitchen was hot. Their carrot and coriander soup was excellent. Overall I'd give it 2 and a half out of 5 stars.
I thought it was Avoric, with a "c." The Gaelic writing threw me. I wasn't expecting pseudo-French "cuisine." |

i've been several times, it's ok, but the service is terrible. yay for crepes, but boo for crapo korean waitstaff. don't sit upstairs if you want to get a wine list.
