And remember hold their feet to the fire verb. Pisses me off when kids don't use verbs. What did you do on Sunday? "I computer game!" "I soccer!"
"Give me a dong sa (verb). I ate a computer game? I kissed a computer game? I killed a computer game?" |

I'd like to build on this idea, and stay with the small steps approach.
You could start them off with 'I like pizza'.
Write 'pizza' on the board and ask 'What do you like?'. As above, they can't say it if it's on the board already.
Problem:- that's not enough because Korean students always screw up 'like' by saying things like 'I like movie' cos they don't understand countable and non-countable nouns.
Solution:- put 2 columns on the board: 'I like money' and 'I like computer games'. Say 'I like moneys' is wrong and 'I like computer game' is wrong. But some nouns can be both count and non-count. I like to illustrate this with 'chicken': 'I like chicken' means the meat, and 'I like chickens' means the bird. Then ask them if they like dog or dogs to see if they got it.
Once you have 2 full columns with the 'I like...' pattern you can make a game out of it by having them do a board race or see who can write 10 correct sentences the fastest. That's probably not so appropriate for middle school students...but there's plenty of ways to make it more fun. Someone suggested using funny words like 'monkey brains' - that's one way.
Things have already got complicated enough for one day. There are lots of ways to build on it in subsequent lessons. You can get them to say 'I like chicken but I don't like ice-cream' (negatives and conjunctions); 'He likes Sarah' (third person singular with proper names); 'I like to eat chicken/eating chicken' (like with infinitives and gerunds); 'I like a cup of coffee after breakfast' (like with singular countable nouns and time clauses); 'I enjoy eating chicken' (instead of like, enjoy with gerunds only); 'I like it very much' (substituting a pronoun and adding intensifiers) etc etc.
There's quite a lot for them to remember when you get down to it - and this is just basic English. Hopefully, if you keep putting quick reviews into your lessons, you can kill that horrible habit students have of saying 'I like computer game'. |

| Privateer: Great ideas! Students need to know that count and non-count nouns are important! Sure, they learn which is which, but they don't usually know WHY they are important. Putting count and non-count in two different columns is a great idea! Emphasize the "s" and the "non-s" words. Hopefully, they will intuitively understand... |

| this is simple, but i have found one way to help a shy class is to act like an idiot. when one student finally answers, throw your arms up and cheer, give him candy, make it like he won the lottery, other students will want candy, and tell them you must answer for candy, the brave kids will start to answer, then later call on the quiet ones. but when you call on the quiet ones, make them talk. it drives me crazy when girls just stand there and laugh. to them, this is considered modesty, and tehy are shy. dont let them sit. make them stand until they give an answer. slowly they will learn its ok to talk, its ok to answer... |
