Do any of you with Korean spouses or partners discuss the issues surrounding Dr. Hwang? If so, what are the outcomes? |

I was explaining to my gf that many of the greatest scientists in the west, major Nobel prize winners, weren't exactly moral leaders and when you set one up to be some role model, sooner or later you're bound to be disappointed. We're all human. |

My wife laughs every time CNN mentions Dr. Hwang is a national hero here...and she's all for stem cell research. Based on that alone, I'd say the whole thing will soon become a non-issue. |

My husband thinks that he is a con... mind you, he dislikes the whole country, so we are getting out in the not too distant future. |

I was reading an article in today's Korean Herald. It's by the prof. who teaches English at SNU. He was talking about when MBC aired the true side of the story people were threatening the producer and the producers family.. patriotism taken too far.. |

Remember back when comet Hale-Bopp was heading towards the sun. Some idiot started to claim there was a UFO (a "saturn like object" aka SLO) following the comet. Ostensibly it was loaded with human-eating reptoids. Naturally, the guys who discovered the comet commented to Time magazine or the NYT or some major media org that there was no spaceship following the comet. The SLO was merely a bit of refraction on the telescope lens.
Well, on the call in radio shows, Hale and Bopp were threatened and called traitors to earth.
So yeah, Korea has its own set of fork-wits, just like the good ol' USA. |

There was even a thing in either the Chosun Ilbo or the JoongAng Ilbo this morning saying that the research itself is suspect.
We may not have heard the last of this one. It has the potential of ranking up there with Ohno.
You do know of course that some S Korean stole the plans for a nuke and sewed the blueprint in his calf. He didn't make it back to Korea because the CIA killed him in a fake car accident in California. This is why the South didn't get the bomb before the North. Ask your students if you don't believe me. It's all the fault of the Americans. |

Poor little lemmings. Don't they know that information is only as reliable as the source? In any case, I'd be ready to bet SK has the parts for the bomb stashed away so one could be hastily assembled if the need ever arises. |

There was something in the IHT (the NYT produced section) that the American doctor who blew the whistle and headed back to the USA (with a clutch of Korean scientists, mind you) is or was involved in a patent dispute with Hwang (geez at least with this controversy I know his name now... versus "oh yeah, that there Korean stem cell guy..."). I suspect the ethical violation issue was the American guy's way out of a situation that wasn't going his way. It doesn't change the facts of an ethical violation but I wonder if this would have come to anyone's attention if there wasn't a money/fame issue at the heart of it. |

My Korean boyfriend and I talked about it and he was saying that the US was and is putting a lot of heat on the Korean government and science establishment due to the US administartion's current anti-science stance. I must add that my boyfriend is not an American hater (he went to High school and university there) but he makes the point that everyone involved in the project is taking a lot of heat.
I personally think that it is a lot of Koreans who are sabotaging these scientists. CNN and the BBC have given very little coverage (and unbiased coverage) compared to all the Korean rags who are just going crazy over this. |

Yes, I was wondering when the poop would hit the fan. I'm not convinced the various Korean news outlets only sees this as an opportunity to increase their share of the market. Don't forget that American evangelical Christians can be relatively tame when compared to like-minded Koreans. |

Also, this week the Catholic church announced Korea would get a second bishop or cardinal (sorry, don't know what one is higher). That seems suspect a reward or perhaps another foot soldier to try and build the ranks of science-hating nutbars in this country? |

Yeah, it is. Well, I wouldn't worry too much. Most Catholics are much more liberal than the Pope. |
