|
|
I'm planning a trip in Jan-Feb - maybe a month in South Asia. A couple of years ago I spent a bit of time in SoutIh Asia - I loved Laos, Thailand sort of OK, loved western China (Lijiang or Shangri-la, as the Chinese now call it).
Any jewels you can suggest? I can go from India (on West) to anything in Far East as long as it's warm. I like smaller cities (like Luang Prabang in Laos) and also outdoorsy stuff. And I love temples.
Oh, and I REALLY like cheap. And not hordes of westerners.
Thanks.

If you want slightly less tourist traffic than Thailand, try Malaysia, Cambodia, or Vietnam. The out-and-out highlight of SE Asia for me was Angkor Wat. |

I spent 3 weeks traveling in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai/Rai etc. It was fine (I did some trekking also) but frankly didn't compare to Laos - wished I'd waited for all this until I got to Laos. More interested in off-the-beaten track/oddball destinations, but thanks for your suggestion |

Not to be anal about this.. but SOUTH ASIA equals India/Nepal.. probably Bhutan.. possibly Bangladesh as well.
SOUTHEAST ASIA equals Thailand, Malayais, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, (and sometimes Hong Kong). |

I posted "South Asia" because I am interested basically in everything from India east, but I've visited only "Southeast Asia." Sorry this wasn't clear.

If you want to avoid tourists, then you should avoid Vietnam as well. I loved Vietnam, but I don't think you will ever see more tourists anywhere else. That's just my opinion. |

Sri Lanka fits the bill. Lots of history and cool temples ( hindu ones are amazing looking) extremely cheap, and off the backpacker trail mostly. There were lots of Northern European package tour types, but they're fairly easy to avoid. |

Yeah, I was in class when I wrote that and the kids were annoying me. That was supposed to say "anywhere else, I have ever been."[/quote] |
