I received this version of the infamous Nigerian 419 scam the other day:

Quote:
From The Desk of Mr.Amos Zongo
Audits & Accounts Dept
Bank of Africa
Ouagadougou Burkina Faso

Dear Friend,

I am Mr Amos Zongo, a banker with the above mentioned bank in
Ouagadougou
Burkina Faso in West Africa, holding the post of the Audit & Accounts
dept.
On Monday, 31 July, 2000, one Andreas Schranner, a German National, An
Astute Business man of international repute, a contract with ecowas
country,
whose endeavours spans various areas of Business interest, (Real
estate,
contract and Farming .etc) made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit, valued
at
$10,600,000.00 (Ten Million, Six Hundred thousand United States
Dollars) for
twelve calendar months in my Bank Branch.

Upon Maturity, we sent a routine notification to his forwarding address
but
got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we
discovered
from his company that Mr. Andreas Schranner was aboard the AF4590
plane,
which crashed Monday, 31 July 2000 into the Hotelissimo.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/859479.stm

After further investigation, it was discovered that he died without
making a
WILL and all attempts to trace his next of kin proved fruitless.

On further investigation, it was discovered that Late Mr. Andreas
Schranner
did not declare any next of kin or relatives in all his official
documents,
including his Bank Deposit paper work here in our Bank. The total sum,
$10,600,000.00 is still in my bank and the interest is being rolled
over
with the principal sum at the end of each year. All efforts to trace
and
locate his next of kin proved abortive.

In accordance with the countrys banking laws and constitution guiding
this
banking institution stated that after the expiration of 5 (five)
years, if
no body or person comes for the claim as the next of kin , such money
will
be revert to the Burkina Faso government treasury if nobody applies as
the
next of Kin to claim of the fund.

Consequently, It is upon this respect, I seek to present you as a
foreign
partner to stand in as the next of kin to the late Mr. Andreas
Schranner
since no one will come up for the claim.

Upon acceptance of this proposal, I shall send to you by mail the ASB
Bank
"Next of Kin Payment Application Text Form" as well as detailed
information
on how this deal would be carried out.

The money will be shared in the ratio: Sixty percent for me, thirty
percent
for you and ten percent for any arising contingencies during the Course
of
this transaction. I guarantee that this will be executed under
legitimate
arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law, as I will
use
my position in the Bank's here to perfect this business transaction &
secure
Approvals and guarantee the successful execution of this transaction.

Please be informed that your utmost confidentiality is required. If
this
interests you, I want to remind you of the confidentiality of this
Transaction at hand whatever your decision is.

I await your urgent response. Your detailed reply should contain your
telephone and fax numbers for easier communication for onward
proceeding.

Thanks.
Mr. Amos Zongo
Audits & Accounts Manger

I'd love to have some fun with this, any suggestions on a response to this fine gentleman?

My usual procedure in dealing with these is to find all e-mail addresses (both in the header and in the body) that appear to belong to the perpetrator. Then, I find the abuse contacts for the mail services (e.g., whois -h whois.abuse.net foo.com for an email address of [email protected]) and mail complaints to each (being sure to include the full headers and message body).

Generally, these clowns use free webmail services to send their crap. Usually, the abuse contact for the webmail service is the same as that for one or the other of the e-mail addresses you can find in the message. Because this is webmail, however, it's often difficult to trace the spam back to the ultimate point of origin (i.e., the computer in Nigeria used by the crook to access the webmail service).

But of course you know that, you're looking to bait them, right?
What you want are some ideas from scambaiter websites:

Inspiring stuff!

I think my goal just became getting Mr Zongo to send me a photo of himself in a ridiculous pose of some sort.

Bulsajo, are they talking about you here when they tell us who gave them the great ideas on how to scam the scammers???

So aside from being sophomoric humorists, who are we really? Wed love to tell, but the Prince is most likely part of a Nigerian crime syndicate (you can read more about Nigeria 419 crimes here) and we dont want to get into a pissing match with the Nigerian Mob.

But heres what we can say: the main instigator works at a leading management consultancy, where he adds value by drawing impactful charts that demonstrate cross-functional knowledge and best practices. Our most creative touches came from the founder of a radical internet start-up thats currently in stealth mode. The other guilty parties are intellectual property attorneys, one of them a frustrated musician, and the other a wannabe Hells Angel. Most of us live in the great state of Texas. We put our pants on one leg at a time, and are generally busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest. Thanks for visiting our site.

I've had some pretty funny exchanges with a scam artist on Ebay. I guess he was running too many scams, because he couldn't keep his alias straight. It changed five times in as many emails. He answered "I am honest man. I have a family, I wouldn't risk prison for 2000$" when I expressed hesitation in sending a money order. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Superfly: no I'm the first guy, who adds value by creating impactful cross-references and drawing charts of best practices. Laughing
I'm sure as hell NOT busier than a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest- one glance at my post count here will tell you that much (oohhh, that's right- we got rid of the post counts... guess you'll have to take my word for it Wink)

Hollywood: I don't suppose you can share some of the more interesting correspondence? It's sounds ike it would be entertaining reading.

Canuckistan: Get him to wear a flowery hat. Tell him that all Canadians/Americans believe the national traditional dress of Nigeria involves a flowery hat, and you need him to prove he's Nigerian. That would be a good start anyway, no?

I wrote him a nice email back saying I was a fundraiser for our church group (The Divine ESL Waygook Brother and Sisterhood!!!) that gives free language classes to the poor and wongjangnims (ha!) worldwide but mostly in Asia, and that we needed money to build another language/worship center in Itaewon, Korea etc etc but the developers are insisting we serve soju which we feel is Devil Water.

I didn't save my original email I sent him (dammit!) but he did respond.

Flowery hat could be an option, stay tuned Very Happy
