Inspite of all the strict regulations going into place to clean up the industry, it seems that the situation is not getting any better.
The bosses seem to still cheat from the teachers, lie and bypass certain aspects of contracts without fear of retribution from any government agency.
Why bother coming to Korea?
I know the biggest response to this question is that you can save alot of money for just a few hours of work. But is it truly worth the aggravation that comes with the job sometimes?
Why not go to Vietnam or Taiwan, the money is just about the same and I heard it is alittle bit better...maybe.
I always hear that if all the scallywags are kicked out, things would get better.
I haven't seen or heard anything that leads to this great sense of respect we are suppose to get soon.
So why bother? |

Money is definitely not good in Taiwan right now. Korea is where the money is for teachin English as a second language. |

lastat,
I think you are jumping the gun here. This crackdown/reform has not been in effect for very long. Things will not change overnight and the cumulative effect of the measures might that a while to become apparent.
Judging things now is not very useful as it is much too soon.
As for other places to teach two key words sticks out in your proposition/question: I heard.
You heard it is better than here...from who? Any solid evidence?
I also heard many things from various friends/aquaintances teaching in Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. They each have their own stories. It might shock you to learn this lastat but abuse happens there as well and sometimes, it is far, far worse as ESL teachers in some of those nations are fewer and the industry less organized.
It might also shock you to know that many teachers right here have a good job with very few problems.
You have been here a while (according to your posts) and honestly, you should be able to tell that jobs here are what you amke of them and that your situation (the quality of it) is largely dependent on your actions and on your choices.
I would venture to say that the same ratio of malcontents and unhappy people exists in Vietnam, Thailand and other nations and that you might (read might) be indulging in a little "grass is greener" approach. |

From your comments, I'd say you have misperceived the situation entirely. The crackdown has been about cleaning out the illegal teachers on the basis that someone who would ignore immigrant labor laws is not fit to teach English.
Any effect on sleazy hakwon directors is purely accidental.
Koreans pay deference to teachers because of cultural things. Respect has to be earned, just like anywhere else. |

Jobs in public education appear to be increasing. Why not just apply for these and tell every recruiter you're not going to work in the private educational industry because the businessmen who run it are such idiots? |

It is much better than before. Your thinking is too short term for some of us long time people. Trust me on this, it is improving. |
