What are the all-time top 5 things that EFL teachers in Korea do that really get your goat? Mine might be...

5. habits of posting annoying lists of annoyances on internet forums
4. the astonishing capacity to extrapolate conclusions from one encounter with a Korean to 45 odd million of them
3. a large proportion of EFL teachers' inability to think of anything other than greenbacks
2. little attempt to learn the language beyond "1,2,3" and "mechju juseyo"

and way ahead at number 1... EFL teachers coming to live in Korea... only to start complaining about it!

next person?

1. Those who choose to enter a war of pig-headed broad-based generalization versus pig-headed broad-based generalization on the other team's side!
2. Those who apologize for things about Korea that even the Koreans aren't proud of.
3. Those who are amused or pleased by the ways Koreans abuse their children physically and psychologically.
4. Those who disparage my posts on Dave's.
5. Those who ignore my posts on Dave's when I'm seeking attention, as I often am in the Off-topic forum, especially after drinking.

those who come up to me on the subway just to start a conversation in which they b*tch about korea, in a loud voice thinking nobody else can understand them.

those who come up to me on the subway just to start a conversation in which they tell me how hot/easy/dirty korean girls are, in a loud voice thinking nobody else can understand them.

those who only leave itaewon to teach lessons

those who have a small part time job doing something cool (ie. djing) and then say 'i'm a dj... i also teach a little bit of english sometimes'

guys whose korean 'friends' are always female, and then criticise all korean guys despite never having taken the time to know any.

Clearly that won't get you far here. What happens when you want that fourth beer?

Oh, that's right... Idea I remember, some people do drink them one at a time.

Anyway... How about collecting all of the LOVE this, HATE that, etc. threads and putting them in one basket, to be called something like, "Things you possibly LOVE and/or HATE about KOREA or KOREANS or those IN KOREA who may be speaking ABOUT KOREANS, whether or not you may still be in KOREA, regardless of which PLANET you may currently reside on, and despite or perhaps even on account of maybe feeling AMBIVALENT about the risk of being ANNOYING to KOREANS or NON-KOREANS alike, whether in the aggregate or in the particular, notwithstanding anything left unsaid but nevertheless assumed, IN GENERAL."

Then, of course, we'd add a disclaimer. Very Happy

There's one thing that never fails to disgust me : people who complain about Korean strangers being friendly and seeming proud of responding rudely to them--people like that just shouldn't be in such a social job as teaching-- not ever, anywhere.

Unfortunately, the logic of this point is going to fly right over the heads of the "but my rants are more justified!" crowds.

So it would be perfectly OK if the freaky waegook you're working with does a midnight run and leaves you holding the bag?

Be careful what you wish for ...

EFL teachers who insist that Korean bosses consider things from a Western perspective when they themselves refuse to consider the Korean perspective.

Foreigners that complain about Koreans' inability to speak English!! Good god man, you're in Korea! You need to learn their freakin' language (or just stop complaining)

Posters (like the OP's #4) who, when people say "Korean men spit too much", think they are saying this because they saw "one Korean" do it and that they are then assuming all Koreans do it. Rolling Eyes We are not saying it because we saw one person do it! We have seen lots of 'em do it. Do we think every man does it? No, don't be stupid.

Take Homer's signature (the sneezing/generaliztion thing), for example. Homer is a bright guy, good posts, but he seems to think that those sour on Korea are doing it based on ONE experience. Come on now, nobody is that stupid (I hope)

When did the world get so literal and anal to take every word at face value. I don't think ALL Korean women are hot, but I feel fine telling my friends back home that "Korean women are hot" Do they take this to mean that I think they are all hot? No. They use their brain and realize that I just mean a lot of them are.

There's a big difference between writing an essay and casual conversations/posts. Generalizations in essays=BAD. Generalizations in other areas=Not good, BUT not to be taken literally.

When I say "Canadians love hockey", who in their right mind is going to assume that I men ALL Canadians. No body (unless, of course, they have a lare, prickly cucumber lodged somewhere uncomfortable)

Actually Mr. Homer and I don't think that EVERYBODY who complains about Korea is doing it based on one experience. Just most of them. And nobody is that stupid to actually think that we mean EVERYBODY... (I hope) Laughing

It really dislike a lot of foreign mens attitudes towards women. Maybe living in Asia has plays in a big part in this, but their sure seems to be a lot of misogynistic pigs here...guys who seems so caught up in this "yellow fever" bull shit, guys make it their life mission to bed as many korean women as possible even if it means to point of border line rape, guys who pigeonhole western women as loud or fat, guys who feel the need to hit on anything with a skirt in the bars, it goes on...and why does does it always seem like EVERY western man thinks that the Korean women HE'S scored with are the HOTTEST women on the planet earth (and sometimes feel the need to let a bunch of random strangers know over the internet) Rolling Eyes ?...
