I have a lot of respect for some of the 'geek' types who frequent these forums so I'd really appreciate any advice.
Is the time right to do a new build when I get back to Korea later this month. I figure my Xmas present to myself should be a nice new computer. My question is 'is it the right time?' will stuff get a lot cheaper after Xmas, I plan to build it in Jan or Feb.
I already have a load of OK stuff and will recyle what's left into a server-storage box. Bearing that in mind and
What I have:
Nice flat monitor 19"
Two HDD, one of them is a mere 40gig but the other is 80.
Pentium processor 2.4 ghz with a reasonable MB
Gig of ram
Can't remember my exact videocard, but I think it is a radeon 7800 or something-I'm not in Korea atm so can't check.
Audigy pro sound card with live drive thingie-Yes, the expensive one.
DVD RW and CD RW drives.
I think that's about it!
What I want.
I want a secondary machine built from reused bits from the above system.
My primary will be fast, very fast. I want it to be able to edit and deal with audio and video.
I like my soundcard but would like to have more options regarding inputs, I'd ideally like a cheapish method to run at least 8 mono inputs into the computer. Not so bothered about digital, I want to be able to use it as mainly a music-film machine. Ideally I dont want to have to deal with a big mixing desk, I can do it all in cubase SX anyway.
I want a vid card that enables me to plug a decent video camera in and transfer everything quickly. Which is better? usb2 or firewire, I've been told that usb2 is quicker but do the cameras cost more or have any disadvantages.
I want everything to run quickly and be networked.
This is my Xmas period project so I'd appreciate any feedback you techno gurus in dave's land might have. |
