DARN! that's strong.
After lunch my Korean friend and I just did two shots of Bacardi 151 I'd bought at the local illegal imports shop ("Glass Door") here on Geoje Island (like the "Red Door" in Itaewon, which is the same size from my trips there)... sure is hard to use proper punctuation and grammar stuff here at the moment...
... and I'm seriously messed up.
I was the sort of guy who drank twice a year back home, at most, but who takes up nearly every invite by Koreans to socialize, eat out and - of course by their habit - drink alcohol.
But today I had other plans, a dinner with a Korean woman I like. She has travelled the world several times on funds from her parents' successful funeral home biz here on the island, her English is decent, and she's interesting to talk with, cute too but I ain't into her because she I have no idea of who she is, she doesn't talk about herself enough, I don't get a sense of what makes her tick, but for chitchat and talk about the world she's great. But I have to cancel.
Because two measly shots of this 151 proof stuff has my head bobbing like a pez dispenser. BE CAREFUL.
Has anyone even seen this stuff in stores? It has the Bacardi brand and says Puerto Rico rum on the side, so I though it might taste as yummy as the AWESOME Cayman Island rum my high school sweetheart brought back when she, her sister and her step-mom went to visit a family friend there nearly twenty years ago now. that Cayman rum was soooo good. The only drink I have ever initiated in any sopcial scenario has been Caribbean rum - trying to recapture that particular rum.
So I bought this 750 ml bottle here in Korea for a decent 40,000 won price, thinking Puerto Rican rum might be as smooth as the Cayman rum was... but it's so not - more like gasoline, or my dad's moonshine.... I just took a five minute break in writing this because that's how long it took to concentrate long enough to find and read the alcohol percentage on the bottle... dang!... i had to look again, 75.5%. My father's home brew is clear and stronger but I don't drink it much and then usually mixed alot. But this rum was downed straight, I thinking it would be smooth instead of a burn. I should've read the label.
And the two shots were in my traditianal korean tea cups. So the shots were big, maybe two or three in one. I wouldn't have had the second one but my friend and I set out to have two so it seemed like the manly thing to do to finish the second shot. Now he is driving back to his home, well he should be there by now, unless he crashed his car.
I haven't been this sloshed more than twice in Korea and five times in my life. The last time was when zed and I went out late, and i'd slept in until 2 the following afternoon.
It's not even five saturday afternoon, and the day/night is shot, so to speak.
Be careful with the Bacardi 151.. is it even legal in Canada? I've never heard of it. |

Two 3-oz. 'shots' = 6 oz.
At 75.5% alcohol by volume, the total alcohol consumed is slightly less than 9 'regular' (40% by volume) oz.
You shouldn't feel that bad... are you sure it was 'real' Bacardi and not some counterfeit K sh*t distilled in Incheon and put in a 'Bacardi" bottle?  |

instead of your liver, yeah.
That's the thing, it wasn't. I thought it might be like smooth Cayman rum, but it's more like burning moonshine.
Oh well. Maybe if i drink copious amounts of water I'll sober up in time for my dinner engagement. |

Double that. They were in teacups, as mentioned in the original post... are you sure you ain't half drunk?

Uh, it was sealed and sold in an illegal imports store which only seels stuff the local thousands of shipyard workers from europe and elsewhere bring to korea with them... the store is better than the "red door" but not by much, same principle though. so i doubt that it was korean stuff.
have you ever drank moonshine? a simple mathematical calculation cannot equate four regualr drinks with an equivalent amount of alcohol in moonshine.. soemthing about the concentration i think... whatever, it feels like my dad's moonshine... messed me up after a few drinks... |

I have indulged in it...and I feel your confusion...
...about 4 years ago, just before I arrived the 151 was my shipping off to Korea gift... 3 of us drank a quart.... I remember nothing...
(worse than those soju monsters who steal my brain here only to return it in the morning...or err....afternoon bruised and devoid of any thought)..
do drink tons of water to at the very least get you running for a whiz to the potty - at which time you can drink yet more water...flush it out and best of luck  |

so it's in stores back home? and yeah, I've found soju messing up enough - 151 is in another league though.
i'm only slightly disoriented, loosy goosy headed, but out of sorts enough to wreck my evening plans... i cancelled my dinner plans... will munch on dry ramyeon noodles instead it seems  |

You're a brave man.
Bacardi 151 is not to be drunk straight, as you may have found out.
It is to be held in the mouth, and then sprayed out onto a flame, ala c@cktail show, street circus, sacrifice ritual, etc..

I love this thread!
Is anyone old enough to remember to LCB (Liquor Control Board) of B.C.
overproof rum? It was the same alcohol percent. The provincial govermnment would import it in bulk and bottle it... many a night I can't remember (and days after I want to forget).
Still... for a rockin' good, inexpensive time, you can't beat pure grain alcohol (99.9%) ripped off from the Chem. lab... some times I wonder how I ever managed to graduate.  |

Dude, 151 is available in Canada. In fact, Vancouver is where I first experiened the "devil's brew." A friend and I knocked back half a bottle, jumped on our mountain bikes and headed off to the Avalon in North Van. Along the way, I noticed that my friend had gone AWOL. I cycled back and found him lying prone in front of a parked Winnebago with a pool of blood spreading out from under his head. As you can imagine, I sobered up ASAP, convinced an Asian guy living across the road to call an ambulance and we headed off to the casualty ward at the North Van hospital where I told the doctor on duty that I was a med student back home and assisted in sewing a few of his external stitches. He had a massive gash running from the centre of his head around his eye and down to the edge of his mouth where he'd come in contact with the edge of the Winnie. I'll never forget my friend's face: he was high on pain killers and laughing up a storm but couldn't believe that I was sewing up his melon. |

All I did was stub my toe.
I always thought liquor in B.C. had to be no higher than 40% alcohol. Maybe that only applied to home brew? I dunno. I don't know the difference between a white russian and a tequilla sunrise, or whatever drinks related. But I've learned something new today. |

That is way too much alcohol for the body to cope with all at once. Water, baby, drink some water! |
