In Korea everyone starts with 100 points. No points = NO JOB. Do something that annoys your employer & you lose a few points. Do something BIG and you lose 50-60 points.

Refusal to attend any OVERTIME functions will guarantee you the loss of at least 20 points.

Good luck.

I and several other foreigners at my institute must go to a mandatory seminar on Saturday, December 3, from 9 am to 1 pm. Does anybody else have to do this? Does anybody know what the topic(s) is/are?

Thanks.

Do you know where it is? My school is making us go, too. But, they haven't told us where it is.

My hagwon is making us go again this year. I went last year and it was a complete waste of time. The Academic director told me it was "mandatory for all teachers" but I dont think she knows all the facts. PEIguy, could you post the website link your director told you about so I could find out for myself. Cheers.

I gave the link to Seoulhiker.. it's on the board at work.. I will post it tomorrow..

In 3 years in Korea I never had to attend one of those meetings. I pointed out that I dont work on Saturdays....and going to that meeting would be unwanted work. If they really really wanted me to go they would have to pay overtime rates for travel time, meeting time and return time....never had to go. Laughing

i went. bugged out 1 hour later.

who was a sucker and stayed for the WHOLE THING?

just go to the desk and say "damn, real sorry, i'm getting a lot out of this lecture and i really don't wanna miss it... but i have to teach in ONE HOUR!!!"

it works. try it.

I've been to several of these training seminars. A real waste of time. I was told that it's mandatory and that failure to attend could mean that immigration won't renew your work visa. But, one year my haggy boss forgot to tell me. There was no trouble for me, but SHE had to pay a fine.

my favorite was the dude who ended his lecture with the message "you must touch children".

he is now dubbed, in our circle, as "the-kyobo-with-the-albatross-around-his-neck".

why, i don't know. the caricatures i was drawing made my coworkers laugh.

Is this whole thread a running gag that I'm not in on? I've been here for 4 years and have never heard of such a meeting. Seems kind of Draconian to me. Did they take attendance? What could they possibly do if you didn't attend?

my boss said we HAD to go. he was tense last year about losing his school due to the tuition cap. they do take attendance, it's a form that is ripped in 3 - one piece goes to immigration, one to the board of education and one to your boss.

whether or not it was BS i went anyways because my boss has been really good to me and i don't mind quelling his fears.

that said, i didn't learn shit from this thing that i couldn't learn on the job in the worst hagwon in korea.

in case immigration and the seoul board of education are reading, REMEMBER THIS - YOUR SEMINARS ARE A MIND-NUMBING WASTE OF TIME.

and that's all i have to say about that.
