Anybody else being forced to attend this *bleeping* seminar on Saturday at the Immigration Office in Seoul? When I arrived at work this morning there was a note on my desk saying all native speakers had to meet at the school at 8 AM to go to some kind of seminar until 1 PM. Am I allowed to say that this pisses me the hell off? (Moderators: forgive me if the language is too bad.) In any case, I'm wondering who all else has to do it, and when you found out about it. My school is insisting that they just found out yesterday, which is why they told us today. Given how much my school likes to lie, I rather doubt this. Do let me know though.

The topper was that when I asked about it, all the Koreans adopted that whole "The stupid foreigner is angry again about nothing...don't move too fast or use big words or else their stupid foreign blood might begin to boil and they'll eat us all" attitude. *sigh* SO sick of it.

Simple solution, turn your phone off and don't go. You're unlikely to be fired just tell them with a straight face that it slipped your mind and that you'll go to the next one.

BTW it's probable that they suspect you submitted false documents and are using this as an excuse to get you to come to immigration so that they can lock you up, fine and deport you.

I did the whole confirmation of degree thing about a month ago, and I was the only one from my school who brought my original degree. Maybe we ALL have to go so they can grab the one potentially shady teacher at my school. That could be worth getting up at seven AM on Saturday morning. It's still infuriating though.

It was actually a mandatory training session. The brochure I got before skipping out on it (and returning to turn in the paper at the end so it looks like I went) said it was mandatory and would be given for all teachers...I didn't pay enough attention to see if that was ALL in Korea, ALL in Seoul or what.

They did something like this last year, and although the letter my academy received said that all academy teachers across Seoul HAD to go, because they only notified the school a day or two ahead of time, my school didn't make us -- only the academic supervisor went.

At other schools, I know "representatives" were sent, also.

The whole thing was so trivial in the end that I don't even remember what it was about.

This is just plain ridiculous.

Apparently you need to bring the pope along to confim your identity and credentials. Or you could hail Christ himself in case the pope is busy. Remember to bring 37 photo ids, all notarized and encased in gold. We foreigners have been known to cause economic crises as well as unwanted pregnancies among Korean couples.
