Have you ever travelled by freighter?
I've been checking it out, and the cost of freighter travel from Pusan to Vancouver is comparable to air prices. Sounds like a good alternative to flying, if you've got the time (ten to twelve days). I do have the time at the end of my contract, but am a little unsure about going on a freighter where the captain and crew are mostly, if not all, male (or so I'm assuming). As a female who is travelling solo, I am concerned about safety issues. Other than that, it sounds great.
If you have travelled this way, or know of anybody who has, tell me about your/their experience. When and where did you travel? Were you travelling alone? What was the crew like? How did you fill your time? Etc. Etc. Etc.
Thanks in advance,
Kim. |

I've never done it Kim, but that's not the kind of thing I would ever recommend a female do alone. |

A little bit off topic, but may I ask: where did you find info on traveling by freighter? That sounds like something I'd like to try myself in the future. |

I traveled by freighter a few years from Long Beach ,CA to Busan with stops in Tokyo and Osaka. The ship went by way of Alaska and the Bearing Sea. Great sights. Even had the opportunity to experience a typhoon at sea. Cabin was first class as were all meals with the Captain. I was the only passenger on board so I had to entertain myself. You have the run of the ship and it is an interesting experience. There was also a small indoor swimming pool and gym/sauna. Most newer ships have them. Crews are treated very well when not on duty. I also had use of the officers lounge with state of the art DVD and sound systems. Tons of movies and music. Alcohol was available at cost by the case (beer) or bottle (wine,etc.). Had a great time and will do it again when I have the time. |
