|
|
My present director says, "I feel like you didn't work a week, so is it okay if I pay you 1.5 instead of 2 million won this last month?"
I say, "Well, the way the visa was set up, I must leave the 2nd of December, and I started on the 5th of December last year, so where is the week you are talking about?"
He backs down, but only a little, and I get him to agree to 1.6 and then 1.7 million, and I stop arguing there, not wanting to make my last couple days more unpleasant than they are bound on being. Also I felt a tad guilty that I gave her only a week's notice, though of course, the contract said nothing about giving notice, assuming one is actually finishing the contract in full.
I know he ought, if we only go by what the contract stipulates, to give me the 2 million that is due. What do you all think I ought to do or say? I am not necessarily gunning to get the full 2 million, but at least, I want him to know I think it's fu|<ed what he is doing.
I appreciate the advice.
Thanks in advance, |

It's a weekend (third and fourth). Tell him/her to go *beep* off.
You deserve the entire amount. I had something similar tried on me. |

My friend's boss tried the same thing. He called the labor board and got his full pay. |

What is the "notice" you are referring to? You mean that they wanted or expected you to sign a new contract with them? Anyway, if the cheap bastard wants to try and nickel and dime you, you should tell him that you're willing to play the same game. Tell him you'll work the 5th as well and tell him to get his lazy ass to immi to get the two- or three-day extension on your ARC and in your passport. You should get the full amt; but, yeah, sometimes it's not worth the crap. I hope you're getting your month's severance pay? |

Eww... you backed down? Don't let people walk over you. For practice, tell me to f*ck off.
Then realize that your boss is an adult and he understands how visas work. He's ripping you off, no question about it. But, you already agreed to 1.7.
Hope you get your severance pay. |

Had the same crap pulled on me at the end of my first contract. Then, to make matters worse, the school refused to pay severance, saying I had worked only 364 days and not a full calendar year.
Of course, when he called me at 2 a.m. a few months later, begging me to return, I had the pleasure of laughing him to scorn.
Anyway, best of luck, as you'll probably be needing it.
Oh, and DO call the labor board if need be to get your severance. I didn't find out until after it was too late that my [fill-in-the-blank] of a boss really DID owe me severance, even though I'd been in the country a day under a year. |

Yep Korean bosses are brilliant like that.
Worked a winter camp for this ass. One teacher got sick. So he begged and bitched for me to fill in for some of his classes. He said he'd pay 40k overtime an hour.
When pay day came the 'Korean math' came out. Ended up not paying me overtime. The next week he tells me after winter camp that there is a position for me. I laughed my ass off at the guy.
Better yet. Before summer vacation they advertised for 2 foreign teachers. So my friend and I applied. Him using his real identity, me using a fake ID (I knew they weren't going to get us VISA's...they didn't last time, even though they said they would).
So the night before camp starts..they ask where we are. I said we missed our train. We have a 6 am train and we'll be there at around 9. Pick us up at the station.
Next morning I get a call from Mr.ass. Where are you? Then I told him who I was. He didn't even remember me from 6 months ago.
F*ck you I said.
Bosses are like that. They try to screw you over. Remember...if you work at a foreign language school, the reason it's a foreign school is because you are there. No foreigner=no money.
You are their bread and butter....not the other way around.
When you leave bust all his windows at his school |

I know, qinella, it was a weak thing for me to do. But I don't like having to beg for what is properly mine, and like many people, I have a tiny bit of a victim/ coward streak in me. I'd rather have his assurances of severance, return air fare, than risk pissing him off, and have him trying to fight me on those items, too. I know, it's not air tight logic, as I could go to the labor board. I know, I am weak!
That said: I got my severance, and my plane ticket.
This morning, he pulled out some additional Korean math (at which point, I brought up the reality of the contract, wherein one gets paid 2000000 won every month, regardless of how many holidays there are in any one month, how many sick days I take, etc.), and tried to get me back down to 1.6 million, again. I was not willing to budge, and she presented the additional 100,000 (above 1.6) as a 'generous gift.' Whatever- I am okay will eating 300,000 if it means she'll leave me the f*&^ alone, etc.
Thanks again for your words of encouragement, and advice. It means more than the 300,000 at this point. You all had some great points!
Cheers, |

Maybe, I ought to contact the Labor Board when I return to Korea (hence, after I no longer am worrying about an airplane ticket being yanked away from me), a month later for my new contract (with a different hagwon)?
What do you think? Will it be too late by then?
Thanks (again) in advance, |

Uh, oh. 300,000 won. Now the shaft on the submission of the final payment: hurried , last class in an hour and she insists on getting cell phone cancelled with me present. Op, no time to actually HAVE the money in my hands. Money is in KB bank: see wire transfer thread.
Turns out, Monday went fine. I used my International KB card, and it worked fine. And, I didn't have to go to New York, either!
Cheers, |
