Information storage media company Maxell has said it will launch its first holographic storage products in September 2006. The first removable drive will have a capacity of 300GB and a throughput of 160mbps.
Holographic storage works by storing information using light-sensitive crystals. Because it uses the whole volume of the drive--whose prototype looks somewhat like a floppy disk--not just the surface, it's possible to store much more information than is possible on a DVD.

Cool article!
The funny thing is that they only listed the retail price of the actual holographic disks. I'm guessing that early adopters of this technology are going to have to buy a very expensive R/W drive to use these disks. |

Back in 1998 I was taking a Physics class to satisfy my core requirement. Hating any kind of science, this "Physics" class was on holograms. Basically, all the class did was make the things.
The ONLY thing I remember from this class is the professor who was some big shot in the field talking about how memory is going to be saved in light. Something about being able to break down the spectrums further and further. A terabyte being able to fit in something the size of a sugar cube. |

Back in 1999 I played poker with a guy who had a company on the corner of Taehanro and Youngdondaeno which was was funding a research incubator on holographic storage.
I wonder how that's going...
Technology Review Magazine had a great article about it in the summer.
