Hey there, another public school question.

When I first got here I spent the whole day at school. As time has gone by i get to spend more and more time at home.

Lessons permitting I got home for lunch 12-2.30 and I always go home around 3.30/4.00. No one minds, in all fairness work is MUCH easier to plan at home where windows and word are all in English.

When I first got here the MOE told me there was no going home in the day and u needed to sign a special book if u left in the day. We dont even have one!!

So whats the deal at your school. Anyone living the dream where they are only in for their classes?

Unless I have an excuse I am supposed to stay until 4.30. However my school always lets me go if I need to, so long as it's not disrupting classes.

I'm officially obligated to be at school from 8:15 to 4:30 (5:10 twice a week). However, I have the freedom to schedule appointments and make runs to the bank, post office, bakery or just to take a walk any time. I don't have to sign anything or ask/tell anyone. The other day my co-teacher and I drove home to fix my TV. No problem. My school is quite relaxed.

I'm supposed to be in school at 8:30, but I'm typically five to fifteen minutes late. I asked the head of the English dept. if there was any problem with that ("Ya gotta problem wid dat?!") since my first class most days doesn't start till 11, and he replied, "No problema"...

I'm also supposed to stay till 5pm, but this term I've had extra (overtime) evening classes five days a week, so whenever I've finished my daytime classes I've been permitted to trek to my apartment (20 minute walk) and come back either at 6pm (M, W, and F) or 7. My evening classes usually finish by 8:15, and I stagger home (I'm old and not in great shape...) My extra classes wrap up by mid-next week, and during exams I've been allowed to leave after lunch (after a hard day of posting on Dave's forums...)

Things are pretty laid back at my place. However, I got scolded today. Yesterday, I was informed that one grade nine class was moved from today to Thursday, so I assumed I could come in for ten for the start of the 10.15 second class. When I left early today because the 3.45-4.30 TOEIC class was cancelled due to students doing volunteeer work or something, my supervisor said that school teachers should be on the premises no later than nine o'clock each morning. I said, "Sorry, I didn't know. I won't let it happen again." Seems everything is okay though. I plead a bit of ignorance as my schedule was changed for the month of December due to the main English classroom being too cold for the students...no thoughts of it being too hot for the foreigner in the summertime though...no a/c or heating in that room. Rolling Eyes Anyway, things are cool. It usu depends on the week and the classes. Until this month, the only days I stayed until 4.30 were Tuesday and Wednesday; but this month, I'm staying a little later on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays than I did in previous months...bonus was that the morning 8.30-9.10 class has been cancelled M-F, so I can sleep in a little as long as I'm there by 9am. New rule has been quickly engrained in the brain...

Also, my schedule was pretty compact until this month. If I had a big break, I could go and do whatever and could always leave when my classes were finished for the day, but I usu mentioned to the supervisor beforehand to be courteous. Until this month, I finished at one o'clock on Thursdays and noon on Fridays.

I don't think anybody gives two dry heaves whether I am here or not, but I usually stick around until 5:00. Anyway the exit is right next to the main office so I'm sure someone important would see me if I just decided to hightail it. Having said that, I can ceratainly run errands if I need to. In the end I just use the downtime for my own peace of mind. Wink
