actually I have a lot of experience in Canadian public schools special ed; my juniors, so I was told by their regular teachers, are a problem for everyone, not just me. My course being non-credit just aggravated the problem because they only care about the grades. I was given twelve different classes, 40 each, and only saw them one hour a week. What is totally strange is I am now being offered an elementary job....at the same school! One of their teachers is not being renewed (male) and they want me to replace him. ?????? any takes on this?

Personality clash/the want a male/they want an american/they want a blonde etc.

Not much to do with your teaching, but as it's Korea you'll never get the full story.

Korean Logic....it's hard to ever understand it. There is usually a method to the madness, we just never see the method.

Sounds to me like that high school would be lucky if they found someone as good as the OP. My impression is that they are whimsical and judgmental at times here, and will let a good teacher go for paltry reasons: perhaps a few kids moan to their parents or whatever.

Some of the bosses seem not to realize that there aren't a huge number of quality teachers here. Most of the quality foreign teachers are in their home countries, teaching their fellow nationals.

....being a union member may have to do with holiday bonuses and pay
for instance. How foreign teachers are personally treated by the staff of
their particular schools is another matter. Cool

Hi: I just found out my contract will not be renewed at my private high school, in spite of great feedback from students and parents...and the people from the govt who "evaluated" my teaching.
At first I disciplined my rowdy juniors....40 of them, no-credit class, so they were not motivated. The Korean teachers in the English office kept insisting that they were there to help me, and to please refer any discipline problems to them. I did. Bad move. When i inquired why I wasn't being renewed I was told that the Korean teachers had told admin that I "couldn't control my classes." Total shock and looking for a new job.

here is a story to make you feel better. a friend of mine used to teach at a highschool in my small town. he hated the school and the kids but for some reason wanted to stay. he said the kids didnt care about learning, the co-teachers never showed up, and he was often isolated from the faculty.
time passed and they didnt say anything about renewing his contract. with only one month left he asked, and was told they decided two months before not to renew him. apperantly, they didnt want to tell him thinking it would affect his teaching or he would leave. he diligintly finished his contract and left.
they got a new teacher, and within a month this teacher did a runner because of the terrible conditions.
that was six months ago, he loves his new school, and his old one still hasnt gotten a new teacher.
karma karma karma
