Sometimes one seems marginalized in a society that is incomprehensible due to the lack of Korean. I find I have become disillusioned with the whole play especially as it gets colder and more difficult to spend time outside- Maybe I should get a dry suit- or study the lingo more. Anyhow, I've been thinking of going to Taiwan because even if I do not understand anyone I can always go for a sultry walk in the winter, or at least a mud slide in a downpour. I have a ridiculous amount of time off come the 23rd and I can't see how I will spend it in Korea. Perhaps I should go to the Philippines like Palawan. But, I'd end up spending too much money again like my last 3 country tropic vacation. Maybe I should go to Seoul and visit friends while tryin to find Lee Hyori so we can go dancing again, she changed her cell number and now I can't call her anymore. It's difficult getting any lessons planned when the Koreans in the office constantly carry on strange sounding conversations in Korean. Hmmmm maybe I should go to Kagoshima and check out the job markets there it is warmer than Jeju in the winter. I could of course stay in my apartment for weeks on end take bubble baths and drink Korean Raspberry wine while making small works of very bad poesy about drowning in suds. Or conversely I could hike up Mount Halla with one of those plastic disk sleds and sled, crash, and bruise my way down. Even more silly but perhaps more entertaining would be for me to Mountain bike around Jeju National University in the snow and powerslide the beatific campus into a muddy rut hole. Or I could just put "Painted on My Heart" on repeat and walk about Jeju City singing incoherently. No no I think I'll spend my time working on my Great expat novel a story about an Incredibly Powerful Overgrown Stoat Daft who Drafts every Fat Ended bus that foolishly honks at him on the highway, and yet retains amazing mesmerizing Oratory skillzz Fatter than the Biggie Smalls. Or write nonsense on Dave's so it gets deleted...

Errr not sure any suggestions you might make...

I'm going skiing.

I did it once before: worst-dressed person on the hill, best skier on the hill. Oh, and 40-minute lineups for a 5-minute run.

Hi, there-

Er, not sure if the Kagoshima job market is what you're looking for. I lived near Kagoshima for a year, but that was through the government program. Sure, it never snowed there in the winter, but I wouldn't call it "warm"- it was very damp, and therefore chilly, and they don't do indoor heating in Japan (or not often, anyway).

The job market is probably better in Fukuoka- but it's not as pretty, and colder, no doubt.

But then, they speak that strange-sounding Japanese in Japan (and it's even stranger sounding in Kagoshima), so maybe that's not your answer, either. I wish you luck with your ennui. During the break, just try to go with your gut instinct about what you want to do!

Thanks for the well wishes tao. Mmm I knew it was subtropical down there, but I'd rather avoid a damp chilly winter, I guess I still remember Okinawa skin dives too fondly but that's way south; my bathtub I'd swim out miles form one isle to the next of Or Won bay in Schwab Land... Don't feel so bad for me really I just did the unthinkable in America- had a bunch of kids in the teacher's office give me a back massage- if the Korean teachers thought anything of it they did not say...
Mmm skiing in some real fresh powder would be sweet, maybe I can go to North Korea and get their air force to do one of those helo powder jumps like in the movies, but that'd cost too much and I'd end up having to entertain Kim Soooo Ill at his Chalet stocked wit Swiss chocolate and served by the best of North Korea... and I'd feel guilty knowing how many he snowed under.

question: in phuket, how much should i bargain for goods? Is it the 80% off that happens in Beijing? How much will they try to jip me for?

Fly to London. Maybe go to Finland to see friends. Probably go to Scotland to see family. Work out where the hell to spend New Year - maybe Paris. Fly to Singapore and start life as a student.
