I'm also doing this with my middle school students, but I used it with a few of my lower lever HS classes and it worked well.
What Do You Want for Christmas????
Julie: Nancy, what are you doing?
Nancy: I��m writing a letter to Santa Claus.
Julie: To Santa Claus? Why are you writing to him?
Nancy: I��m telling him what I want for Christmas.
Julie: Where are you going to send it?
Nancy: I��m sending it to the North Pole. That��s where Santa Claus lives.
Julie: What are you going to ask him for?
Nancy: I��m asking him for a notebook, a doll, a handphone, an MP3 player, a new coat, make-up, a computer��
Julie: Wait, do you think Santa is really going to bring all that?
Nancy: Of course. I��ve been a very good girl this year.
Julie: No you haven��t! You��ve been in trouble almost every week and you never do your homework.
Nancy: Well maybe. I guess I��ll just ask for a notebook and an MP3 player.
Julie: Good luck. I think I��ll have better luck being really nice to Mom this month.

Then try to get five or ten of them to read theirs aloud before they get to do Christmas cards - the peer pressure to go so that they can get on to the cards really works well. |

This reminded me of that old, add-on memory game...
Kid one: All I want for Christmas is an MP3 player.
Next Kid: All Iwant for Christmas is an MP3 player and a notebook.
Third Kid: All I want for Christmas is an MP3 player, a notebook and...
Though my kids, any level, have always hated that one when I've tried to get them to play. |

| Damn do they ever go crazy with those glitter glue pens. I'm sure I'm making a noticeable increase in the sale of them in my small town. I've cleaned the stationary shop out, and now I'm working on the toy shop's supply. Thursday's grade one class was so excited after seeing what Wednesday's grade one class was doing. But now Friday's grade class is cancelled for me because they have to prepare for a test with a KT. They're going to be just devestated after starring through the windows watching what yesterday's class was still eagerly colouring them long after the bell went. I just love high school at Christmas time! |

I am in the Wisonsin Program, and i havent heard much about EPIK, accept that our contract is a tid better!!! ha ha hah a |

I believe I have now cleaned my town out of glitter glue pens. There may be some left at the toy shop on the other end of town - I'll have to see - but this morning I bought the last of what was left at both stationary shops.
Re: letters to Santa, one of my high school students asked for a doll in hers. That may be because of limited vocabulary, but given their infantile interests it wouldn't surprise me a bit if she actually wants a doll. |

| Such a dull day today - only one lesson to teach ... my best middle school class ... all 29 of them were so perfectly behaved it was boring. Then I'm thinking, what am I going to do to kill the afternoon? I walk over to my second desk in the other staff room I use just for something to do and the middle school VP and one of the homeroom teachers come along and want to have chicken and beer with me in the staff room at 3.00. Just because they like me. Yes, I'm supposed to be here 9-5 and no, I don't have much of a social life Monday to Thursday, but I tell you, I could never have imagined such a wonderful job. Teaching Christmas carols and writing letters to Santa with the nicest kids in Korea, surfing the net, and enjoying free chicken and beer. And I'm getting paid for this. |

Wow, 29 students in a middle school? I thought Daegu was a big city. You must be at an all girl's school.
For the last couple of weeks after having completed the 30 hour teacher's workshop and the gifted student program , I only teach 16 hours a week, and only in the mornings. So in the afternoon, I'm pretty much free to do whatever.
For me I think the pay is awesome, I've been teaching for 5 years in the same area, started from 2nd level (1.8 million back then) now it is nearly 3 million. (including housing allowance) , so really I don't have to teach illegal privates to support my wife and two kids. EPIK is still worthwhile, if you're willing to stick around. |

No, it's 29 in one class; 180 in the school (though I'm mostly based at the larger adjacent high school. And I'm a little south of Daegu itself. Sounds like you got a great EPIK gig. I turned them down simply because I didn't like the uncertaintly of not knowing exactly where I'd be working. |
