as for the illegality nonsense..

It is volunteer work so if you are not recieving any financial compensation then it isn't illegal...

Feel free to do the work as you will not get into trouble....

Just because, receiving financial compensation is not the issue in the eyes of the law, volunteer teaching is just not legal. It is illegal, therefore, people 'shouldn't' do it.

What really should happen is that this ridiculous situation should be re-evaluated by Korean polititians to enable legitimate volunteer work. But surely just skirting the issue for the sake of common sense is not going to help Korea.

Well, I think the issue should be addressed at the level of Korean government. That and the traffic laws. Oh, and... <INSERT MILLION PAGE RANT>

It absolutely is illegal!

I had to verify my degree at immigration. I went there and asked them if it is legal to volunteer. No, it is not. Rules of immigration approval still apply (and that includes getting your school's approval).

So Casey, your fear that E-2 holders are keeping away from volunteering and helping poor children based on current Korean law is exactly reality.
