hi i'm heading to Suwon late December and i'm wondering if anyone knows of any vegetarian restaurants in the surrounding area. i'll be in yeoungtong-dong but anywhere in Suwon would be helpful. also if anyone has a tried and true method of ordering a veggie version of dishes, i hear its somewhat difficult. are temple meals available everywhere and what are they like?

They're not great. Korea is not a vegetarian country. Even the vegetables often have meat in them. For instance, kimchi is usually made with seafood products. If you stick to Buddhist monk restaurants, you'll be safe, but expect to lose weight quickly.

Suwon is an excellent city for non-vegetarian food, and prepare to miss out on a lot of great cuisine.

Here's a guide that a friend of mine wrote for all you proteinally-challenged individuals.

Korea is such a difficult, baffling and disorienting experience for new teachers. Can you imagine being a vegetarian on top of everything else? I almost want to feel sorry for them, but they do kind of bring it on themselves. How most don't die of malnutrition their first year amazes me.

I got through fine in a much smaller city with more limited restaurant options. I just had to be willing to cut some corners when I ate out. No big deal really. It will help a lot if you acquire a taste for dwenjangjjigae. (soybean stew)

I never ate much in Suwon, but if you make the <30 min. trek to Songtan there's a great Thai restaurant with good veggie food.

Nah mate, ordering veggie food's not difficult.

I eat dolsot-bibimbap almost every day. It's often made without meat, but if I go to a restaurant (shik-tung) for a first time, I'd say something like:

Dolsot-bibimbap yoh. Korgi pehgoh, yoh.

Heh. I like to remember the word for meat by associating it with those fat little dogs the queen of England likes. It's said the same way.

If you want kimbap to be made for you without ham (or spam, or whatever the hell it is...) you can't actually say the same thing. You have to specifically say:

Hem pehgoh, yoh.

They'll probably still put that fake crab-meat stuff in it though. I don't know the word for that.

I agree with that about liking duinjung-jigae. If I'm not eating dolsot-bibimbap, I'm probably enjoying a duinjung experience. I don't mind the odd shellfish though. If you want yours made without the poor little blighters, try saying this:

Jor-gay pehgoh.

I've never tried it. I wonder what reaction you'd get... heh.

Have fun with the language. They'll love you just for trying.

   Please don't put meat in.

****ȿ ־? Does ***** have meat?

Here're the basic veggie foods I eat when I go out.

Once you find a couple of little places you become a regular they'll know you're the funny foreigner who doesn't eat meat.
