Didn't your mother teach you to turn down the flame very low? I've never ever had my rice burn. And I never stir the rice. Taking the lid off makes rice stickier. Boil the water, add the rice, put the lid on, turn down the burner and come back in 20 minutes to perfect rice every time.
I don't pinch pennies enough to know whether a gas stove is more expensive than a microwave.
